re: Would you rather stay at home for work or go back to the office?

I like parts of it. I like skipping my 40ish minute commute to and from work. I probably pick up 3+ hours a day of usable time by not getting stuff ready for work, gearing up at the office, closing down and driving, etc.

It makes me much more likely to fire up the BGE for a real dinner on a weeknight and have a glass of wine with the wife outside. I think part of that is just prioritization and we can make it work even when schedules resume. But not all.

I already technically worked 1 day a week from home and can work from home as I want for the most part, but I probably only did so 1-2 days a month. I think my ideal would be going in 3-4 days a week, so when things get back to normal I'll probably actually move to a 4 day week in the office.

There are pros & cons with both

Working from home: I probably got more individual tasks done because collaboration in the office was scaled down so dramatically. The benefits of collaboration were really the only thing that lacked.

Working from the office: Waste more time in the morning getting dressed & ready for work, but collaboration in our office is very beneficial (at least for my position) so that was nice to see that return.


Overall, the only thing that slowed down while we worked from home was collaboration. Most people had a feeling of underlying guilt to make sure they did enough work at home so we wouldn't question their productivity, but I understand not everyone is wired the same. However, anybody who says people won't be equally productive at home is just paranoid and likely not fit to manage a number of employees in modern times.

Yeah I'm glad that guy got to go into work but the sanctimony from those types is silly. Some of the companies that have absolutely killed it during the shutdown (at least relatively) have had most of their workforce working remotely.

To his credit he backed off the dumbest portion of his post.

Just a couple of weeks ago several people on here said that commercial real would be in trouble and that buildings are going to be useless since working from home will be the new norm.

Also I’ve heard people say on here that business travel and people who used to travel a lot and do face to face sales calls are no longer going to do that since zoom and other technologies will replace that.

We shall see.

I need a balance. I have a tendency to get distracted a little more when I'm home (especially for day games during baseball season). On the other hand, I am a lot more efficient when I'm at home because there are a lot less distractions when you aren't easily accessible by your staff.

I've been back in the office for a week and I wish I was back to working from home!

The requirements just to get into the gate of this plant are ridiculous.

I’ve always had the opportunity to work from home 20-30% of the time. My employer is more than okay with that and even encourages it.

Personally tho, it can be frustrating at times because when I go into the office, I can leave at 4PM. Because there is not physical or act of me leaving the office - people think it’s acceptable to slap 6,7, even 8PM meetings on my calendar.

I enjoyed the flexibility. I got just as much work done during quarantine as I did before.

Stay at home and it's not close.
