NYC has a second to none job market.
But you will never own anything: housing, car, etc.
It’s worth making a lot less in a small city like Atlanta, Phoenix, Charlotte (and Nashville for you nurses, tourist bartenders, and logistics pussies). Freedom.
We should make all desk jobs remote again so we can live in more remote places. Most jobs will still exist in major cities, but do we really need to be there baws? Just be within a few hours of an airport for a quarterly offsite, and you’re good.

Feel good quote by McQueen, but he had multiple homes in L.A. California notable in Malibu and also in Palm Springs.
Malibu was not as developed then as it is now
From what I understand Palm Springs is essentially an overgrown small town (there's a good doc on YT about Sinatra and PS which gives a lot of its history). Also, it has very appealing demos
If you're going to take him literally I guess you can call him a hypocrite. But I think you understand the point he was making

LA because I am accustomed to driving rather than being at the mercy of public transit. Much of NYC is not really feasible to drive in.

NYC by far. Spent a lot of time in both. NYC is cleaner, generally safer, easier to get around, and people get shite done there.
LA is just bullshite. Homeless everywhere, people shooting up heroin on sidewalks, hard to get around, not very walkable, and just a lot of lazy grifter wannabes.

to me it comes down if I have kids or not
I like both but would never want to raise kids in NYC but would love living there before kids...well at least until the last 2 years.
LA though is pretty awesome and I would 1000/1000 pick there over NYC if i had a family and kids to think about too

Lived in Hermosa Beach for 3 years and would do it again. I hate the Cali politics but love the opportunities for activity. You can surf in the morning and snow ski in the evening if that's your thing. Hiking, concerts, comedy clubs all over, Disney, Universal, etc. Just a ton of options for all hobbies or desires.
My wife lived in L.A. for 15 years and misses it and her friends. She knows the only way I would go back is if it was the South Bay again, so she saved up and just bought a condo there, not far from the beach on the outskirts of Redondo, so we can spend more time there. May start spending summer there when it's 100+ in Louisiana.

What you mention about people getting shite done in NYC is why I ended up living here.
Just one personal experience:
I was interested in starting a record label and in both California and Italy it just kept getting deferred over years with "definitely, call me. let's get drinks and talk". From my end too.
I was visiting NYC and at a punk show. Mentioned the ideas to a couple of people and in 15 minutes we were outside on the phone with a band I wanted to release and another person with a label to share warehouse space.
Whole thing came together while I was there on a 1 week vacation and I moved a few weeks later.
For good and bad, that's NYC.

Political landscape in LA is arguably better than in NY.
As a place to live, unless you are young & single, Los Angeles (better weather, better access to a variety of outdoorsy & family activities) is superior to New York.
However, I think as a tourist or visitor, NYC is a far more interesting place to visit than LA. NYC has better culture, history, architecture, etc.

I would rather live in Louisiana.
I liked the people in Louisiana, I liked how they thought and how most dealt with others.
The scum you have everywhere; in NYC you have a whole lot more scum and now you have a city gubment that supports and encourages them.
Kitty Genovese happened and NYC got better for a while. Now not so much.

I wouldn't ever live in either, but I'd go LA if forced to pick one.
