Exactly what the new drivers capable of doing the math will eventually learn, especially in towns where the rates are less than $1/mile and probably somewhere around 15 cents/ min.

There are several things that have to occur to make that much on just 4 trips.
Favorable rates (BR, NOLA, and Lafayette do have some of the highest rates in the country (likely due to smaller population))
Surge
Distance
I am otherwise not putting full stock in what your buddy says. Who gets that lucky in just 4 trips?

there is a flat rate to the airport, its $33 for a Uberx. So unless he is driving black or an SUV....he's lying

I don't think Uber drivers take into account the vehicle costs. The ones I know just complain about taxes and gas.

If I had a low paying job or no job I would definitely do it. But right I now I can just work OT and make so much more than what a glorified taxi driver is paid.

Keyword: Airport Runs
I worked at a hotel in college and taxi drivers would give us kickbacks if we gave them airport runs, because that is where the money is.
At the same time if we gave them a non-airport run, such as a short run a mile or two up the road to a restaurant, they would do the run then come back and cuss us out.

I don't drive for uber but have picked up a side gig. Company is called doordash. Essentially, it's a service that allows you to place an order at any restaurant you want and i'll go pick it up and deliver it to your door, usually within 40 minutes. I live in Chicago so the amount of uber drivers on the road is astonishing and I don't see how any of them make enough money to keep doing it. I see uber drivers EVERYWHERE when i'm delivering my food. One consequence of the amount of uber drivers is the amount of extra vehicles that are on the street. on Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights, downtown Chicago is packed. Sucks when I have deliveries around that area.
I'm making about $14/hr after I pay for my gas. Doesn't include wear and tear on the vehicle. It's a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder that's 100% paid off and we never drive. If it broke down, I probably would donate it and use it as a write off on my taxes.
