How much you make boils down to how you figure the cost of your vehicle into the equation. I'd personally use the govt rate which is 57.5 cents per mile

Uber covers you and Uber for liability only. Uber posted their entire auto policy online for insurance industry scrutiny. The grey area is only with respect to liability only during condition 1 (app on, awaiting a ride). Your personal auto carrier will certainly say you're a taxi during that same period. There are numerous articles on this from the insurance industry.
At no point do you have any coverage for physical damage, and there are insurance programs that fill this gap because it is well established.
So, if you have a financed car and you hit something, it comes out of your checkbook and your personal auto won't pay.
It appears to the same sort of people who would buy a relatively new car to do this and think it's profitable are the same kind of people that will overlook the right kind of insurance to protect such a profitable business. Or they looked into it and figured out the insurance aspects make it unprofitable and willfully ignore it.
Our collective inability to do basic math is a serious problem as a society. If most people cannot look at this pseudo occupation and realize it's a loser, we're doomed.

Good post. Uber reminds me of betting sites with their "too good to be true" offers. If it were as easy and profitable as they make it seem then everyone would be doing it.

I really like Uber from a the consumer side and I didn't think I would. Turns out I'm lazy and will pay someone to drive me.

I currently drive for Uber and this is just incorrect.
If you drive at peak hours and in surge areas you can make a killing a few nights a week.

at minimum uber drivers should have the same background check standards as cab drivers
