Just being able to breath takes skill, not any old joe is going to say 'hold my beer and watch this' and walk up to summit Everest

Man, the OT knows how to twist people's words. I never said it was easy, I just said I don't think there is much "rock climbing" associated with it.

well saying that you think it's pretty much just walking up a hill, no one needed to stretch any words.

And I mean you started it off with 'I don't think there is much'

which I would think that is a feat for the average joe.
And how much further and how many more camps until the top?

And if I'm not mistaken the OP is an old arse man and not exactly mister triathalon

The obstacle is not financial, it is being cold for so fricking long. Occasional snow skiing and the Arkansas deer season is all the cold I need. (I'm from New Orleans fa Gawd's sake.) I will die happily in a few decades if I never climb Everest.

I think he went on Nepal side of Everest so base camp is 17,000 feet and summit is 29,000 I think.

It's called mountaineering which depending on the mountain can be every sort of technical climbing known to man.

Some mountains have, ice, rock, and glaciers that must be conquered.

I'd like to try it in my older age when I'm no longer able to climb hard stuff and I have to turn to more mountaineering. There are other peaks that offer a similar yet less commercialized and overcrowded experience

Yeah well the elevation where I live is about 500 feet so that shite would kick my arse. Hell, 10000 feet made me feel like a bitch.

Not being able to breath and feeling like my lungs are on fire is not really what I consider a good time.

Nope. Im too climatized to S.LA weather. At 17,000 its fricking cold. At 29,000 its fricking bone chilling freezing up there. Im not cut out for that. I dont like being cold and I dont have any fat insulation on me. Pay me 150k to walk across the widest part of the Sahara. Now we talking.

K2 is much more treacherous. 1 in 4 die attempting and only 300 or so have summited it. You can have someone carry your gear and set up your camp on Everest. One of my favorite quotes by Yvon Chouinard from the documentary 180 Degrees South:

quote:

Taking a trip for six months to get in the rhythm of it. It feels like you can go on forever doing that. Climbing Everest is the ultimate and the opposite of that. Because you get these high powered plastic surgeons and CEO's, they pay $80,000 and have sherpas put the ladders in place and 8000 feet of fixed ropes and you get to the camp and you don't even have to lay out your sleeping bag. It's already laid out with a chocolate mint on the top. The whole purpose of planning something like Everest is to effect some sort of spiritual and physical gain and if you compromise the process, you're an a-hole when you start out and you're an a-hole when you get back.

We call it type 2 fun. Not necessarily fun in the act but a damn good feeling afterwards and looking back on it

Yes, but I would "accidentally" sprain my ankle and have to go home once I reached the base camp.

Would get lots of selfies at base camp before heading home.
