Dealt with this a few years back. Not only a micromanager, but a complete idiot. I did everything possible to work with it, but ultimately left for a small pay cut with another company. Worth every penny.

Only an a-hole only gives negative feedback. It doesn't even logically make sense, when someone is doing something well I want them to know that so they can keep doing well.

OP, I had the same problem with my old job. I started in BR and had a wonderful time with the company, lots of recognition and growth. I had to transfer to another area and my new (female) boss was a total piece of shite. She rode everyone's arse constantly and destroyed all workplace morale. I eventually left the company after another year and a half. There was no room for MEN to advance there due to her. I knew I was a great worker, everyone there constantly told me how great I was at my job etc. Sometimes you just gotta move on.

Look for a new job now, don't be in a rush but you are feeling the first symptoms of burnout - a micro managing boss is a big precursor.

Once burnout has set it in you are in trouble, hard to bounce back quickly. Definitely need to head that one off before it gets bad.

I've had great bosses who started as micromanagers but changed to solid, supportive managers once an employee earned their trust.

I've also had coworkers who accused bosses of being micromanagers, when in truth those coworkers were incompetent and not worthy of the manager's trust.

If you're being micromanaged after proving yourself worthy of trust, seek employment elsewhere.

I also deal with this to an extent. Just got a text from someone that they sent me an email.

when I realized that a former boss needed me more than I needed him, and that he would be really fricked if I quit for an offer with the competition, and probably bring a few clients with me - it changed my whole perspective....and I did exactly that anyway about five years ago and my whole family continues to benefit enormously from that decision.

Work-induced anxiety is becoming much more common - and severe - today than ever before.

No, I'm good at what I do, but for someone like you, I guess, just know that companies hate firing people and having to job search and hire someone. That stuff is expensive. They'd rather stick with your marginal bum self than find someone new.

Sounds like your boss needs a class in leadership and you need to loud cap his arse.

I've never seen this occur as you describe it.

CAN it happen?

Sure, but the odds are heavily stacked that it won't happen.

The micromanagement trait comes from a general distrust of anyone other than themselves.

Sometimes it's a god complex, that no one can do it better than themselves.

Either way, most adults who distrust don't generally wake up one morning as a changed trusting person.

"Trust but verify" instead.

If you truly believe that you do excellent work, then you have nothing to be worried about.

This is such a self centric, simpleton viewpoint. I've had a boss as OP describes that is absolute hell. I mean would send me a 5 paragraph email if I showed up 1 second later to work than him or left 1 second earlier. Had an absolute bizzare freak out because I started an email with "Hey ___," instead of "Hello ____," Nobody liked this guy. I was constantly worried about getting laid off. I had such an uneasy feeling every single day because I simply just sat next to him.

He was such a pompous prick that treated subordinates like dog shite on his shoe. Not one person will show up to his death bed.

I now work somewhere 180 degree opposite with no micromanaging boss, supportive culture and am so much happier

For you to make that comment, tells me you've never dealt with a boss like this. It is a very real thing. Once you have one, you'll realize all the other people with stories like this weren't lying.

Eh, a good boss acknowledges when their employees are handling their business.

It can be absolutely miserable working for a boss that is never happy and justifies their existence by micromanaging.
