Working on a cruise ship is probably a miserable job

I’m on a Mediterranean cruise right now and asked one of the waiters about the work schedule. He said they work 7 months on and 2 months off. During the 7 months, they work every day. His shift is early morning and afternoon / evenings with a couple of hours off during lunch. It probably isn’t as bad dealing with the older crowd on this cruise as it is when this ship heads to the Caribbean on its rotation. I haven’t seen a single drunk person, definitely no fights among the demographic. The bartenders are nonstop all day. I’m sure the cooks and dishwashers have it as bad as the bartenders. I wonder what the turnover is.

Yes I have it on good authority from friends of mine that work/have worked on cruise ships that it does indeed become a thankless grind after a while.. though in fairness, id say most jobs in life eventually get old.. at least on a cruise ship you'd be able to travel a bit while being miserable .. To me, life is in large part about choosing your own personal type of misery .. not to get all philosophical, but Jerry Seinfeld has a quote:

I don’t think so, there is probably a 3 to 1 ratio of male to female staff and they work 12 to 15 hour shifts per day. I’d say just the opposite.

These same folks from the Philippines work offshore oil and gas too. Idk if yall remember, but several years ago it was all the woke rage for every company to do some sort of slavery survey. Basically review their business for any sign of wrongdoing as it relates to labor. One finding for our company was the catering staff. The suggestion was to put a time clock out here and connect it to the internet. That was at least 7 years ago and the clock has never made it out. It’s despicable what Aramark, Sodexo, etc do to these people. And by the way, go look at their majority shareholders, the oil company included. It’s the same group of people and the usual suspects.

I'd guess if you don't have a family and permanent residence it might not be a bad gig for a little while. No rent or probably any bills, your food and shelter is effectively included. I don't know that you can really call it getting to travel if you're working every day though.

Did the Mediterranean Cruise this time last year. If one of your stops is Mallorca, charter a catamaran! Fully stocked, alcohol, food! Swim in the Mediterranean. Beautiful water, perfect temp!
