I’ve heard that if the ship is big enough and they aren’t close to port, they’ll chopper you off. That goes for entertainment performers not just rank and file staff. It’s apparently written into every contract.

I talked to a couple of young women from the UK who worked in the spa of a ship that sailed out of New Orleans. They said they took the jobs to travel and see the world, but neither had so much as set foot in the French Quarter during their multiple, weekly stops within sight of it.

The waiter on our cruise in July was from the Philippines. He told us about the 7 month contracts. His wife had their son in April right before he left. He won’t go home to see them again until November.
Now, he did say that the cruise line will pay to fly his family out whenever they want so they plan to do them at once he’s older. They also pay for his flight home and back to Florida. He told us he has no expenses on the ship and they don’t pay any taxes.
He was a really good dude and we tipped him well each day because he was busting arse. He was our assigned waiter for dinner. We’d see him working the buffet in the mornings. And one night, around midnight, my son and I went up to play some basketball and and my man John Le was up there tending the sports equipment.

I currently live in a part of the world that is largely Buddhist.. it's more a philosophy than it is a 'religion', per se.. and yeah, I find that my world view aligns more with Buddhism than with the catlick religion I was raised with .. also the culture here seems to be more peaceful generally, and I attribute that to the Buddhism adherence as well .

I don’t think Buddhism is “selling” anything, unlike a lot of other religions.

Fun fact- Having lived before in the Philippines , I can tell you that NBA basketball in the Phils is not just as big as it is in America.. it is BIGGER.... I dated more than one woman who, when id mention where I was from (NOLA)- the first thing they said was "Oh, the Pelicans !!'.. I was like 'What ??'.. They never heard of Mardi Gras, Bourbon St, or jazz music, or the Saints or anything else.. but they knew the fricking Pels which have only been around for a few years .
