Who the hell would fly that route? That's 3 hrs by car....or less.

You don't fly that as a final destination, it's to connect. I used to fly Lafayette to Houston to LAX all the time.

That's the best looking one I've seen in a long time.

I wish I had more upvotes to give. Good work with the original pic. We need more of this.

Flew Alaska Airlines yesterday. Upgraded my seat to their “premium class” which was essentially extra legroom and unlimited free alcohol

5hr flight, I ring the call bell to ask for a drink and the FA snarkily replies that I have to wait until they do the second round of drink carts. “He” then proceeds to sit back down in the galley

Ok, fine but don’t call your shite “unlimited” then

They still have to deal with shitty customers on flight. They are up in the air for most of their shift (so it's not like they can just get up and leave to go deal with any issues that might come up). And they sleep in hotels a lot during the year.

It would be cool to travel all around, but I wouldn't say it's easy.

Was having a discussion w/ my teenage son about how air travel used to be.

Stewardess (or steward) vs. flight attendant
Age/weight requirements vs. aged slagathors
Pleasant experience vs. Greyhound with wings

Female friend thought this would be a fun job - she was a theater major in college and of course could not find any real work after graduation.

She worked as an FA for one of the regional codeshares - maybe American Eagle? Bunch of 50-60 seat planes. Lot of MSY-DFW several times a day. After a few months she started getting on more assignments that took her away for a few days at a time, but still not exactly a lot of fancy travel. Best bet might be she goes off duty in some mid-size city at 6 pm and doesn't have to report back until 11 am next day, so, gets a night on the town.

Quit after about a year and a half. Was making like $16 an hour with shite benefits. She said if she could hold out 3-4 more years she could probably get on with a major carrier and the pay/benefits/life would get better.

I brought my geiger counter/dosimeter on a flight with me once.

Is there an easier job out there? Seatbelt and 02 demo and pass out drinks. Dealing with the public seems to be the hardest part of this job and also boredom. But I would love to fly at a moment notice all over the country. I think it would have been fun for awhile in my younger years.

Anybody here ever work as one?

There's quite a bit more to it than that, my wife did it for 13 years.

1. Although it's generally done only annually you can -at any time you are working- be approached by someone from the FAA and quizzed on FAA policy. There's a fine for every question you miss, that fine is paid by YOU and you aren't able to fly (read: work) until you pay it off (something like $50 per incorrect answer). One bonus on this is that all flight attendants are supposed to have their FAM (Flight Attendants Manual) with them at all times and can refer to it (it changes quite often so they have to keep up with the changes, even missing one that was issued a day or two earlier is considered a fine).

2. Scheduling is usually done by seniority, this means your newbies are often doing a loooooot of waiting as standbys (meaning they aren't getting paid unless they get called but they should be ready to be called). There are also FAA rules regarding how long you can work in a day and- once you've reached that max- how much time you must have off before being allowed to work again (which can make scheduling a chore).

3. You have to be at the airport an hour before your flight (depending on the company, but it's true for most of them) and you only get paid for the time when the doors on the plane are closed. This means the time seating people before the flight, the time between legs and the time cleaning the plane are all unpaid.

4. You have to deal with the general public in a situation where many of them feel highly entitled. You also have the bullshittery of "emotional support animals".

5. Some companies put their attendants on set routes, some don't. Those that do, a day of 45-minute flights is tiring as frick. Those that don't have to bid against all the other flight attendants each month (usually goes by seniority, but other things like speaking a foreign language can be taken into account depending on flight origin and/or destination).

Mrs. Bard had it figured out though. She worked the transcontinental red-eyes so she would get the maximum number of hours as quickly as possible plus getting hotel stays between each flight as well as flights with little to do (because most people were asleep so they didn't want/need anything) as well as shift differential.

I can't confirm whether it's true or not but when I boarded my flight to basic training in 95 the flight attendant told me that one of the perks was free flights during off days and what not. Said she was a regular flying to different cities to do the night clubs. Nothing too far because of time but she went on and on about partying in Memphis.

There have been a couple that I'd be willing to pay for time between legs. Not a lot, but a couple.

That should be illegal.

Talked to two girls from Scotland and South Africa who had been working on a cruise ship out of NOLA for over six months. They said they took the job to see the world.

When I started talking to them about New Orleans, they admitted they had never ventured beyond the Riverwalk Mall when the ship was docked.

You've obviously never dealt with the general public. It sucks enough when you aren't dealing with drunks or people that don't speak the same language as you. It would be cool for a few years if you were young and single but no thanks on making a career out of it
