I would pay that for any of my dogs. I've replaced two hips and one ACL.

Well, let's assume spending 4k doesn't hurt you so much.

I would ask the vet what kind of recovery can be expected. If the dog will make it back to 90-100% then I may consider it if I thought the dog had 5 good years or so left. If the dog will be fricked up and likely miserable forever...then it might be time. I mean it sounds like it got messed up good.

That's too much to spend on a dog, even if you have the money.

I'll vote for the you shouldn't take in a dog if you aren't going to do what is necessary.

Of course, you put the dog down if its the right thing to do, but not because of $4,000.

Though, I'm curious if you're getting hosed too.

This is the correct answer. The 4 grand is your tax for being irresponsible.

Yeah that's crazy.

I have a friend who told me over a poker game that he and his wife are in over $7k so far in surgeries and procedures for his 3 yo mutt who damaged it's back and couldn't walk.

I told him he is fricking crazy.

I love my dog more than most humans, but those injuries and the bill that comes with fixing might not pass the cost/benefit analysis. The dog's quality of life after recovery won't be what it was.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The dog (an animal) got out from the fence through no fault to this guy and a predator got a hold of it.

We dropped 5k trying to keep our 12 year old lab alive. When they came back and said we need to try this and told us what it would cost we had to say goodbye. She was old, she could have gotten better and dropped dead a week later from something else.

It's sad when finances are the reason to let a pet go, but it's reality.

Vet costs are OOC.

When are we going to see vet practicioners?

I love dogs but when I think about getting one I hear situations like yours and decide I'd rather not have those expenses.

For only $500 more they'll remove the tartar from your dog's teeth.

That's way too much for a lap dog. Hell you could buy several yorkies for that price.

According to some of the OT it's still your fault because you didnt build a guest house with marble counter tops and hard wood floors for your dog to live in.

Reminds me of a story. When I lived in New Orleans I had some neighbors who lived below myself and two roommates. It was a big house split in half with an upstairs unit and a downstairs unit. It was a family of 4, the two parents and two boys about 14 and 7. They were a miserable family always fighting with each other and always very rude to us, wouldn't share parking/storage, etc.

They had a Chihuahua which was the most annoying dog I've ever seen. It would just run up to you a bark nonstop in its high pitched annoying bark. I wanted to punt that frickin' dog every time i saw it.

Well one day it gets out and runs into the neighbor's yard. I think the neighbor had a rottweiler. Well I'm pretty sure the rottweiler grabbed a hold of that fricker and ended his annoying bark with one bite to the spinal chord.

I got stoned and watched outside my upstairs window and took evil pleasure in seeing those a-hole neighbors cry while they buried their piece of shite dog. They wanted to sue the neighbors but couldn't cause the dog was on the neighbors property.

I know it sounds bad but frick them their shitty Chihuahua.

End result was $975 for emergency visit last night and $3,200 more today for major surgery, and stabilize broken ribs, back etc.

Off topic, but this illustrates how much liability is worked into health care costs for humans. The same operation for a human would be 10+ times more expensive, without being 10x more complicated.
