I watched my in laws dump $5k+ into a 16 year old senile dog with late stage kidney failure that came down with bloat. It survived only to need to be put down a year later. Even then my MIL was trying to get the vet to do drastic things.
At the end of the day you have to realize that the dog doesn't understand why it is suffering.

Off topic, but this illustrates how much liability is worked into health care costs for humans. The same operation for a human would be 10+ times more expensive, without being 10x more complicated.
Humans have far more value than dogs but nonetheless your point is noted.

Do you even chicken wire bro?
Yes I could have built an Auschwitz style prison camp in my back yard to keep the dog in there but for f*cks sake if you want out that bad, there is the door.

but over $4k is too much
Agreed. Unless you have young kids that are attached to the dog and make enough money to where $4k is a drop in the bucket, I'd just put him down if it was me. Good chance the dog will never have the same quality of life with such serious injuries and that you'll end up spending more on future vet bills related to it.

I'll vote for the you shouldn't take in a dog if you aren't going to do what is necessary.
Agreed, I spent about 3k on my dog last month. He didn't make it, but no regrets. They thought it was a treatable condition. I feel like I'd have regretted not doing what I could for him. I'm not a cold hearted bastard though

Yeah of course. Just a random observation.

It's more common than you think to have chicken wire in the ground to prevent a dog from digging and getting out.

Vet costs are OOC.
It's my understanding that vets do well, but aren't a bunch of OT ballers. How much do you think surgery should cost?

The Yorkie is a great breed . Pay the bill for the little fella and you get like a ten year karma bump.

Have the vet put the dog down, then go to wife with sob story that she didn't make it through surgery, profit.

My dog is 14 and my limit on saving him is about $500

Karma doesn't exist, but even if it did, what about the anti karma of leaving a poor, cowering, lonely dog in the pound because they paid to have this one defy natural selection?

Not sure if we can comment on the dog situation until we get a pic of the wife.

It's sad when finances are the reason to let a pet go, but it's reality.
I agree.
I've spent about $2k on my 9 year old mutt recently. she has congestive heart failure. Medicine from the vet costs $400 month to keep her going. She has been very happy and pretty active since taking it for a month now, better than she was before. They said she'll probably live a couple months on the medicine before she'll die. I figured i'd give her a few months and then let it go. I'm not paying a car note to keep her alive when I know she's going to die anyway. I say that, but that's a hard thing to do.
Now I did discover that I can order the medicine for $90 instead of the $400 they vet charges, through Allivet.com. The fact that I can get the same exact medicine for that much cheaper really pisses me off, and makes me not trust what this vet is telling me. I sure as shite am not going back there. I understand making margin, but 300% margin is fricking ridiculous, and it's pathetic that they prey on peoples feelings for their pets to make their money.

My dog had his back injured and the vet wanted immediate surgery. Cost was going to be around 2-3k. I couldn't do it. We kept him in a kennel and put him in a little wheelchair thing that goes on the back legs for a month or so while giving him meds. Would have to come home at lunch every day to let him pee in his wheelchair then back into the kennel. I probably spent $500 on vet bills and meds plus a lot of time but that little fricker is running around like it never happened.

I would ask the vet what kind of recovery can be expected. If the dog will make it back to 90-100% then I may consider it if I thought the dog had 5 good years or so left. If the dog will be fricked up and likely miserable forever...then it might be time. I mean it sounds like it got messed up good.
If it's my dog and the surgery will insure a satisfactory quality of life, I'd pay anything I could muster to keep her. However, if she will be in pain and miserable I would sadly let her go.

i just spent 500 on my dog. vet said it could potentially run into the thousands, but it turned out to be nothing.
That said, I'd drop whatever cash i had, max out my credit cards, take loans against my house, whatever i had to do to save my dog. She's family.
edit: she's also just under 2 years old
