Why is young/healthy folks getting COVID not ideal??

It’s obviously clear the abundance of positive tests are related to folks volunteering or being required to take tests bc of their work school situation. The vast majority seemed to be unaware anything was wrong.
It’s also pretty clear that the age group testing positive are the younger folks so the at risk folks seem to be doing a good job taking precautions. I assume the nursing home protocols are still in place to protect the most vulnerable of them all.
Isn’t this the desired outcome to attain “herd immunity”? Would attempting to slow this portion down significantly just prolong the inevitable since a vaccine is still several months (if ever) away from being an option.
I understand that hospital beds “may” be an issue but we should have the equipment and temporary facilities should be able to be quickly installed and staffed up (we have already seen it done).

Several jobs and and the vast majority summer camps (at least in my area) are requiring routine testing of campers and staff. The ability to get tested for free is readily available without a wait. With the deaths still plummeting, this seems like a solid assumption.

Here in AL there are many hysterical people fretting over the big spike in "cases." But if you are paying attention, deaths continue their decline, and there is no spike in hospitalizations. Hell, hospital ICU admits are almost totally flat. It is all on the Bama Tracker twitter feed for those interested.

One reason is because one of those young people employed at my office has exposed our entire staff and therefore me. Now on 14 day quarantine while also inadvertently exposing by diabetic wife.

the issue is that they go home and spread it to older family who are at risk
all of the PSA stuff about being on alert only applies out in public, which is the wrong way to look at it. a false sense of safety within our homes and with our families is the real threat at this point (outside of nursing homes)

Not sure if the LHSAA required it or the school, but my cousin’s daughter was running a fever and she was required to get tested (she is on the cheerleading that is practicing). Yep, she had the Covid. Fever for two days and now back to normal but the practice was shut down for 2 weeks. My cousin said given the mild symptoms, she would have never been tested had it not been required.

Agreed. We should be taking precautions around elderly and vulnerable but that’s called personal responsibility. You should know not to visit Aunt Sally who has diabetes in close quarters. You should know not to kiss grandma on the cheek.

Exactly
Or people in public. Everyone has largely been more irresponsible as this thing has progressed. You can’t get people to wear masks so you can’t really expect them to get tested, much less quarantine if they are feeling fine.

Everyone is going to have to face it. The virus is not going away. Short of a vaccine, herd immunity is the best way forward.
