Spend some time around bourgeois suburban housewives.

But also look at what they’re selling, everything is organic or “fair trade.”

It’s about feeling good, about yourself.

I don't think you looked hard enough in that regard.

Is it Yosemite? No. But you're either lying or trolling to suggest that there isn't good natural scenery and hiking throughout the South.

I have looked around quite bit. There's incredible scenery in the west: Yosemite, Yellowstone, Big Sur, Zion, Arches, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Mt. Rainier, Crater Lake, Glacier, the Maroon Bells, Antelope Canyon, the Valley of Fire, the Beartooth Highway, the Tetons, Redwood & Sequoia NP, Mt. Whitney, and on and on and on.

The continental U.S. west of Denver is vastly more scenic than the east, especially the southeast. Throw in the Canadian Rockies and Alaska and the western half of the North American continent is light years ahead of the east in terms of scenery.

IMO, the only natural feature east of the Mississippi that I consider impressive relative what you can find out west is Niagara Falls.

It's almost completely explained by demographics of certain ethnic groups.

or maybe it's just closer to where they live and faster/easier than most other grocery stores

The average middle class white southerner is fat. Go to any college football game in the fall and report back.

The South is still paying for the Civil War. Reconstruction and all the carpetbag thieves who were tied to the US Grant administration came south and raped our region to the core. We're still paying the price.

Not being racist at all, but we're still paying for slavery. I read a quote one time that went something like this: slavery was our first mistake, freeing them the second mistake.

Now, before you get your balls wadded up, what it means is, we took a race of people who had not been educated, who'd lived not on their own but on our own, and turned them out to fend for themselves.

Hell, northern states even passed laws to keep freed blacks out.

I don’t think all the schooling in the world would change the south.

Unlike the rest of the country, people in the south know how to cook! Everything is centered around cooking and drinking; festivals for everything.

Southern comfort food, Southern cooking, soul food, etc are a factor with the latter being a cultural preference that extends beyond the South. I think being heavier isn't frowned upon much in the black community, and I wonder if genetics also play a role.

The South is a bit more honest a bout weight accuracy and don't generally care how they look. While other states will lie or bitch a bout the number being wrong on the weight scale.

The South has more athletic black and white athletes. I don't why but I guess it has something to do with the warmer weather all year round. College football teams up north use to pluck the best black and white athletes in the south before integration. But when integration began and economic situations improved in the south, the trend reversed.

Even if you took out the south, the rest of the states are still overweight or obese. It is like someone who weighs 280 points out and laughs at someone who is fat at 310. Both are fat and need to drop the weight.

Southerners have always had crappy diets overall . But today, processed foods are attractive. It is cheaper. Southerners are as a whole poorer so the crappy food in the aisles were just very attractive....cheap, sugary, filling and plentiful

It's also the convenience. I couldn't imagine having to feed kids daily and not just say frick it sometimes. just go for easy unhealthy shite to shut everyone up.

(no hormones, antibiotics, non-industrial farming methods, etc.) but all that has been replaced by mega stores dealing imported meat filled to the gills with who knows what kind of medicines and feed, less fresh vegetables sprayed with god knows what, and aisles of processed foods. This all certainly has contributed the OP's observation but, yeah, it's not going to change

Stop learning about farming from quack on the internet or from the organic industry

I believe the rise of mega grocery stores have led to the rise of obesity. People use to grow food and did the work themselves which burned calories. When everything is a convenience, the weight gain will happen and you end up buying more food than you need.

Also technology has made things easier when in the past you had to sweat a little more for what needed to be done.

Healthy food is a vague term. What is healthy food? Why do fried foods get such a bad rap when previous generations in South ate them everyday but were not fat? My guess is they didn't sit around and went outside to work.

bullshite! I’ve been in the food industry forever and afford has nothing to do with it. The truth is certain groups of people are glutinous bastards. Why have 1 side of ranch when you can have 4? Why drink a couple soft drinks or flavored lemonades when you can drink 10? How about 5 or 6 loaves of bread when 1 should be plenty? I see people of all ethnicities who don’t know the meaning of moderation.
