Why is the South so unhealthy in modern times?

I’ve been reading a great book on the Scotch-Irish (Born Fighting by Jim Webb) and their influence on Southern culture, the Civil War, and the US military.
The author describes them as a tough and adaptable people who were fighters and inventors, known for their outdoorsmanship, courage, and scrappy mentality. They were also known for being taller, stronger and more physically capable (i.e. Athletic) than their northern and midwestern counterparts.
Today the southern states occupy 8/10 worst health rankings and are losing ground to more outdoorsy states like California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Minnesota. Only Alabama and Tennessee make the top 10 in average height, the rest are all NorthWest/Mid-West states.
So what happened over the last couple centuries? How did we become the couch potatoes of the nation? Maybe the long-reaching effects of defeat in the Civil War? Hot muggy climate not good for the body or conducive to physical activity? What changed the cultural mindset of the South in this regard? Just curious on other’s thoughts.

Poor people can’t afford healthy food.

When you’re poor you’re more likely to buy fast food or junk food bc it's cheap. $5 can buy you 40 pizza rolls or 5 apples

Sugar and flour are cheap foods.

Of course it is because all those rankings are put together by yankees. Of course.

Abundance of fast food and convenience. Heat also keeps people indoors and with the rise of air conditioner..who can blame?
Plus lots of sugar was in the south..therefore it found it's way into cooking.

I have been seeing more and more “larger” people out exercising lately. I suppose the statistics of preexisting diseases and death associated with the ‘rona may have provided some motivation to lose a few LBs and perhaps take better care of themselves. I think it is more socially accepted for individuals to be overweight in the south.

quote:they neglect modernization of life. Look at people in here talking about the corona virus and shrugging it off. That’s a good example of their ineptitude on improving life. They’re dumb and don’t know any better nor do they ever care to.

Begins in 16th century Ireland/Scotland and progresses to the modern day. Primarily focuses on their participation in 3 events: mass migration to America in 18th century, Revolutionary War, and Civil War.

Back in the day before the northern conquerors came, giants roamed the south. We built great plantations to honor our forefathers and our God and every giant had a crown. We invented everything too
Then the north came and stole everything and enslaved us
We were kings
