re: Why is the NOLA metro so poorly served by restaurant chains?

This question has been asked for decades now, since the explosion of chain restaurants started.
Although the lack of good workers, real estate, etc are all a very small part of it, the real and long-standing reason is that why would anyone go to Chili's in NOLA when you can literally pick any of a hundred restaurants nearby that are infinitely better?
That is why shitty chains do not survive in NOLA.
So, why would those companies choose to try here when they know it will be difficult to beat family restaurants that are better?
There's great local bbq all over Texas but I can still go to any number of solid chains that I won't get in New Orleans, JoPo and surrounds. You'll never see a Culver's here for instance. Vets and the Westbank are lined with chains. Just all the gutter ones. Economy just isn't strong enough to support the ones with higher running costs and that little bit more expensive to eat at. Progress here is slow. Last to get Waffle House, only just recently got the first CFA within city limits.

There were Chick Fil As in other Louisiana markets many years before they opened on the south shore. I think it has to do with lack of suitable employees.
CFA was in Kenner since the 80s/early 90s. It just wasn’t popular yet.

I remember as a kid there was one Burger King and that was on Carrollton and Claiborne. This was the early 70's. I didn't have a McDonald's until the very late 70's. All the McDonald's I can remember were in Metairie around that time..

Lack of developable land, lower incomes, lack of quality entry level workforce, preferences of locals. It's not some conspiracy to deprive locals. These restaurants spend thousands to pay economic, real estate, demographic, and marketing consultants to crunch numbers before they spend $1 million + to develop a restaurant. It's economics 101.

Commercial real estate prices in the NOLA metro area are out of whack with other places in the south. Chains (food or not) have openeing budgets, real estate budgets, labor budgets and all those things are factored into the P&L numbers so when it costs $_____ to open and sustain another location in Tallahassee, Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Shreveport, etc and significantly more to do the same in NOLA Metro, it's an easy decision.
This. There is a long list of of companies that want to be in the market but can’t afford or find real estate. Veterans is in Metairie has very little space right now on the market. What can be found is much more expensive than other markets.

Gotta have somebody to open a franchise. What business owner in their right mind would subject themselves to New Orleans, it's crime, and it's idiotic political upheaval.

Can't afford the unplanned donations.

If progress is having wall-to-wall, shitty chain restaurants, you can keep it.

I read somewhere that Baton Rouge is a test market city because the demographics in the metro area closely reflect that of the rest of the country.
If true, this would explain why there are more options in Baton Rouge.

The “higher end” fast food chains model runs on actual happy pleasant employees. Can’t really pull those in NOLA metro with any consistency . BR can get a way with it by having LSU to pull from

No suitable fast food employees? That's especially sad.

People would much rather choose to eat local than a restaurant chain.
I don't think I ever ate at a chain (while sober), when I lived in New Orleans.

Orleans in particular has strict rules for the architecture within certain areas. Claiborne is where the majority of the chains reside in Orleans. The ones that have built on magazine and other of the more historic or popular districts just don’t seem to survive- the exception being Starbucks.

Nobody goes to New Orleans to eat at Applebees

Whataburger will open here in the next year or two
The rest on your list are shitty, low volume chains that aren’t in demand. You are talking a seven figure investment
