Why is the NOLA metro so poorly served by restaurant chains?

Even when they are in just about every surrounding area.

We don't have Zaxbys, Whataburger, Jack in the Box, Freddys to name a few. It's not like there's an abundance of great local offerings keeping them out either.

Is it simply because the economy is so piss poor here and that's it? Lack of decent real estate? Must be a reason why they go to Texas, Laffy, BR and then skip over to MS, AL and FL....

For what those places sell they have pretty much the same if not better.

You have chicken and burger places.

You're concerned about a lack of fast food options?

People show up at council and battle them going most places. Your basically have to buy an existing one and replace like Sidney did with Chik fil a.

Commercial real estate prices in the NOLA metro area are out of whack with other places in the south. Chains (food or not) have openeing budgets, real estate budgets, labor budgets and all those things are factored into the P&L numbers so when it costs $_____ to open and sustain another location in Tallahassee, Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Shreveport, etc and significantly more to do the same in NOLA Metro, it's an easy decision.

If you're a tourist sure, no is going to Canal St for Waffle House, but if you live here more options and variety makes a place more attractive to live. Why is it these chains are going to attractive suburbs first when they move into a market? The problem is New Orleans has a high cost of living and too few attractive suburbs, even compared to a lot of other middle of the road cities in the Gulf South. Don't believe me look at the companies who skip the place. If it was worth their while they'd be here.

Nola is known around the world for their food. There’s a lot of competition with the local places.

This question has been asked for decades now, since the explosion of chain restaurants started.
Although the lack of good workers, real estate, etc are all a very small part of it, the real and long-standing reason is that why would anyone go to Chili's in NOLA when you can literally pick any of a hundred restaurants nearby that are infinitely better?
That is why shitty chains do not survive in NOLA.
So, why would those companies choose to try here when they know it will be difficult to beat family restaurants that are better?

There were Chick Fil As in other Louisiana markets many years before they opened on the south shore. I think it has to do with lack of suitable employees.
