Because it's not. Through September of 2020, 73,000 more people had died than in 2019. Extrapolated through the end of 2020 and using the death rate from the previous 3 months of July, Aug and Sept, it works out to about 240,000 more deaths.

Yeah, there will be more deaths this year than 2019. Will be interesting to see the final figures. The number of deaths has been increasing every year, so some increase would have happened even without Covid.

On a state by state basis, I'll bet that many won't have much, if any, excess mortality. The numbers will be skewed by big states like NY, NJ and PA that seeded their nursing homes with Covid + patients.

I don’t think comparing this year to last year proves the argument either way. It would be silly to expect there to be the same number of deaths every year.

We also have an aging population so the trend should always be going up.

Could be a number of reasons that aren't part of a vast conspiracy. Sure, there are probably a lot of gaming of stats where people die of other things but they tested positive for COVID and therefore it is listed as a COVID death. Somebody from a hospital system told me they get more money for a patient if they have the COVID which seems like a moral hazard to me.

It would be really interesting/telling to see which types of deaths the pandemic cannibalized. Maybe all the sanitary precautions we are taking is helping stave off other types of deaths related to the flu, pneumonia, chronic respiratory diseases, staph, etc. We'd need to see the breakdown to know.

People doing more cooking from home and being exposed to fewer toxins/smoke from going out and about has to help as well.

This. Differing cycle threshold values on the tests between states could explain as much of the denominator variation as anything. How many false positives does a given state want to crank out to affect their numbers and rates? No one brings up the mountains of false positives these crappy tests are cranking out.

Poor access to health care and coverage, not to mention the obesity and diabetes rate is way higher than California.

Ironic considering the state has hospitals like MD Anderson.

You may be on to something. I didn't realize that SD, ND, and TX were THAT much fatter than CA but apparently they are.

These two states are somewhat similar in demographics.

Are they, though? Cali is 28.6% black/Hispanic. Texas is 44.6%. So Texas has 50+% more of its population in the most vulnerable races.

2015 - 8.4
2016 - 8.4
2017 - 8.6
2018 - 8.7

Both states are around 40% Hispanic. Texas has 6% more AA's and California has 10% more Asians.

That’s because the cucks who live there allow themselves to be walked over in the name of social justice.

Can you provide a link? 2018 estimates show 18.9% Hispanic in CA and 32.1% in TX (not linking because you only need to google “Texas demographics”) Not really close to 40% there.

Additionally, the elevated Asian populace in CA helps their numbers. Asians are skinny and not diabetic. Peggy Hill and the cholos in TX are fat and probably would die from the flu. Comparing the two states is silly.

Because Democratic governors listen to the science and make the hard choices which may be unpopular to you but they SAVE LIVES. Lock down completely, have the national guard administer vaccines via MANDATE, and require EVERYONE to mask and social distance until we have ZERO cases
