Why is Texas's COVID death rate almost 50% higher than California's?

deaths per 1m people:

California - 665
Texas - 983

These two states are somewhat similar in demographics.

Other odd comparisons:

South and North Dakota - 1,688
Maine and Vermont - 235

Oregon - 353
Utah - 396
Louisiana - 1,611
Mississippi - 1,618

I can't make rhyme or reason of this, unless the Dakotas are dirty/trashy.

Lots of unhealthy obese in the population in the southern states. These are even more prevalent among the minorities that inhabit these states at high rates. California with Los Angeles county will be catching up quickly if the current trends hold though.

Do New Yorkers? New York ranks 49th in death rate per capita.

Who knew all that shitting in streets would make immune systems stronger over time. Kudos, Cali.

I don’t know what it’s like in Cali but I swear there must only be a handful of adult Hispanic women in all of Houston who aren’t fat.

Stratify that death stat by county and you'll see a definite geographic trend.

It’s understandable to be confused by that.

Given that it’s wrong, obviously it doesn’t line up with with you expect with reality.

Not only did more people die in 2020 than 2019, it comfortably passed that goal with more than 3 months left in the year.

It really isn't hard if you were paying attention. Cali was spared early on, and their draconian lockdowns delayed the virus some. As with all lockdown states though, they had to pay the piper eventually and they are getting hammered now. When all is said and done I wonder whether there will be much difference. One difference is that TX has a functioning economy. Cali is devastated and the Rose Bowl is being played in TX.

You listed a bunch of states. Funny how you left out lockdown loving places like NY, NJ, CT, MA, etc. How did they fare?

ETA, ME and VT are outliers. Rural, sparsely populated states. You ever been to those states? If so, you must understand their numbers.

Now do the cases in the states with the most stringent lockdowns vs the most lenient. Because the leaders of those states ruined countless lives for no gain and continue to double down.

Because it's not. Through September of 2020, 73,000 more people had died than in 2019. Extrapolated through the end of 2020 and using the death rate from the previous 3 months of July, Aug and Sept, it works out to about 240,000 more deaths.
