That’s right—Silver Spring State Park is home to at least 300 rhesus macaques, a monkey native to south and southeast Asia. The animals are breeding rapidly, and a new study estimates that the monkey population will double by 2022 unless state agencies take steps to control it.
The study, published October 26 in the journal Wildlife Management, claims that such an increase could put the health of the park and its visitors in serious jeopardy—because, among other problems, the monkeys carry a rare and deadly form of herpes virus called herpes B. It’s extremely, extremely rare for herpes B to spread from a monkey to a human, but when it does, it can be fatal.
Florida’s primate problem began in 1938 when a tour boat operator known as "Colonel Tooey" released six rhesus macaques onto a small island within what is now the state park. He procured the monkeys from a primate dealer in New York City with the intention to create a Tarzan-themed attraction on the island, but his plans quickly unraveled.

I think it's only frowned upon to spank your monkey but otherwise owning one is quite legal.

Chances are that many Florida residents have already had a worse strain of herpes than that.

Old lady that lived in that big White House on old Hammond right before Jefferson had a whole menagerie. She had a giant tortoise, a monkey, and several other exotic animals in that nice arse house

Wonder whatever happened to her and her animals.

My wife has it in her mind she is going to import a pet monkey from Indonesia where the owner is sick and can no longer care for the monkey. A friend of hers from Indonesia told her about it and now she is all-in on trying to save the damn thing before the owner has to just get rid of it.

Fun fact: my grandfather's friend had a pet monkey decades ago. My mother recalls childhood memories of the monkey playing cards and shooting whiskey with my grandfather and all they're friends.

You should tell your wife to take care of her own monkey and stop trying to save someone else's monkey

If you let your wife play with your monkey every now and then she wouldn't be looking to buy one from Indonesia to play with

There is also an island in SC that has rhesus monkeys inhabiting it. Over 4000 of them now. It's official name is Morgan Island but is referred to as Monkey Island by South Carolinians.

quote:

Historically, the island has been uninhabited due to its location and distance from the mainland. Originally, the monkey colony now located on Morgan Island was located in La Parguera, Puerto Rico at the Caribbean Primate Research Center.[1] According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were incidents of the free-ranging monkeys that were infected with the herpes B virus escaping. The CDC report stated that there were outbreaks among locals when the monkeys became overpopulated. Puerto Rico was alarmed by this, and South Carolina stepped in to offer an island for research. South Carolina offered uninhabited Morgan Island for the monkeys to be housed. In 1979, over 1,400 animals were relocated to Morgan Island.[1]
