Every time this question comes up, the same wrong shite gets spouted; people claim you can do it at home in small amounts. First, it is ABSOLUTELY illegal to distill alcohol without a federal license in any amount for any purpose. You can distill other substances, but don't put ethanol in that still.
While individuals of legal drinking age may produce wine or beer at home for personal or family use, Federal law strictly prohibits individuals from producing distilled spirits at home (see 26 United States Code (U.S.C.) 5042(a)(2) and 5053(e)).
You can only distill alcohol if you have the proper bonding, licensing, warehousing, and PAY THE PROPER TAXES. The reason you can't distill has nothing to do with health risks or methanol or going blind or fires or explosions and it goes all the way back to George fricking Washington's presidency in one form or another. Do you guys even Whiskey Rebellion? It's all about the taxation.

It's actually incredibly dangerous to operate a home still to distill high proof liquor. Beer and wine is different. When distilling high proof spirit you can blow up in the process and you can brew a batch of poisen without knowing it.

Call me crazy, but the cure for higher alcohol poisoning is ethanol.
The issue comes from taking the first distillate and keeping it. Then adding additional amounts back into the ethanol for added "kick". Kick being poisonous methanol.
Drop the first 20 degrees of distillate and then move on
