You can say oh it’s because these states don’t have a pro team but most actually do and CFB is still way more popular.
They may NOW, but those were all expansion teams or franchise moves.
Earliest I can think of is Atlanta, 1966, Saints a year later. Tennessee Titans were 1997, used to be Houston Oilers. Carolina and Jacksonville were 1995, Tampa Bay 1976.
You can't really count the Miami Dolphins, as Miami is more of an East Coast/international city with Caribbean flavor, and not "Southern".
So, I'm old, mid 50's. Saints and Falcons formed a couple years before I was born... but we can all recite many LSU/SEC historical events from before the mid 60's. LSU has a title in 58, Billy Cannon won the Heisman in 1959.
All the classic rivalries way pre-date the Falcons. There's just a ton of history and tradition.
Now, in the North the NFL came up around the same time period as the Big 10 teams and Notre Dame, but you can make an argument that the college teams are still more popular (it's different on the East Coast, because there never really was a team out there. Even Penn State is Western Pa, not the Philly area. There are no NYC colleges).

CFB>NFL in the South long predates this.
The mentality behind it certainly existed. One of the reasons Alabama football holds its position of prominence in the state is because the state was looked down upon by the rest of the country. Football was the only thing they could hang their hat on.

I disagree. I think the state of Alabama is actually pretty nice. upward trending economy also. Beaches are nice, foothills in the northeast, good food, very friendly people.
The idea that Alabama is a backwater podunk state with nothing going for it besides Tide football is ignorant.

I think most people have hit the main points... have been around longer, accessibility but I think experience is a huge part of it. It's hard to attend SEC Saturdays in the fall and not get swept up and invested. It's a whole weekend cultural event that celebrates your region.... That just doesn't happen in the NFL. Bills mafia maybe gets the closest but also NY doesn't have a CFB team w that experience so that tracks.
The Big10 has some great campus atmospheres, but as a whole I just don't think the north compares to the south when it comes to CFB gameday experience and I think the south has responded accordingly.

My pat answer to this is:
"You pull for an NFL team because of where you live, but you pull for a college team because of who you ARE." In the south, our college allegiances can pretty much define us.

The NFL is corporate politically correct garbage!

Watching or going to a game on Saturday with your dad, grandad, whoever else. Uga lunging at that Auburn player. Peyton leading the band after a win. Mount Cody on the cover of the paper after blocking that kick against Tennessee (still a heartbreaking memory lol), Tebow covered in paint that looked like blood running guys over, Spurrier postgame interviews, LSU at night against Alabama, Brandon Spikes taking that Georgia RBs soul.....CFB in the south was just different from the NFL. But even before NIL I feel like we lost that. You still get moments, but its just not the same. I don't think the next generations look at CFB like we did.

College was a more fun game until recently and more affordable.
This may be true some places, but the Titans have practically given away tickets most seasons of my lifetime.

I disagree with this statement. I have some LA tech and ULL friends that are diehard fans and they hate LSU. But everybody pulls for the Saints. Plus, there are a ton of outstate folks who pull for the Saints. I would say New Orleans has the bigger fan base.
Naw man this isn’t true. Go to any small town in LA and it’s way more pro LSU than anything. Just as you said there’s a ton of out of state saints fans. Guess what? There’s 3x as many LSU fans. Have you spent any time in greater Houston? It’s got a massive LSU footprint.
Majority of the college grads from schools in LA not named LSU are still LSU fans. The LTU/ULL die hards are the minority. Southeastern might as well be LSU-Hammond. McNeese might as well be LSU-Lake Charles.

Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina all lack professional football teams

Not that difficult to figure out.

The older ones like the Falcons and Saints are in transplant cities
What?
Yeah for sure. I lived there for a while, NOLA is full of transplants. It was kind of rare to find someone from town.

Trying to pull for the Falcons since birth was enough to turn me from NFL football.

Do you realize how many cowboys or random NFL teams fans live here? Or people who just don’t care about the nfl
LSU’s fanbase is double the saints in this state

I think it's because the NFL went woke crazy. They are a business and not everyone is in tune with taking the knee or them getting into a political fray.
Are you 5 years old ?
CFB has been liked more than the NFL in the south for a very long time

New Orleanian all my life and those who are worried much about college like that (except for the big games) are weird

Because we are better at football than the rest of the country.
