Just because something is private doesn't mean it is efficient. You need competition and a profit motive as well.
You also need a market that is relatively easy to enter or exit. This is why there are only a handful of companies that build airliners - it's so damn expensive to just get started that you're protected from competition. Something similar would apply to a large military.

Blackwater is the only example you need to understand that full-scale turnover to a PMC is a terrible idea.

There are a myriad of reasons why not to privatize the military two pop to mind quickly:
1. XYZ corp builds the greatest fighting force ever known... then China outbids us for their services.
2. You lose the service to America incentive and the cost of recruits skyrockets and the availability of recruits drops like a rock.

The military is too privatized now! The logistics branches have been cut to the bone because private contracts are taking over. Many units can no longer move their equipment or feed themselves without civilian help.
