Why don't we privatize the military?

Spent time overseas and stateside, there are a lot of inefficiencies in the military. There is a reverse incentive running rampant to maximize your spending and spend your entire budget, so you can ask for an increase the following year.

National defense is one of the few jobs of the federal government specified in the Constitution. I would suggest its their most important job. You want someone protecting you who's only in it for the money?

That is a terrible idea. Once you privatized the military completely, it would be entirely too easy to overthrow the government.

Because our government couldn't control it like they want to 
And, think about some of the shitty work you see from lowest bidders on construction and stuff like that. Probably be similar.

Just because something is private does not mean that it is efficient. A lot of perverse, dangerous incentives are set up by privatizing things that should not be private, e.g. the prison system. We clearly do not want the military's loyalty available to the highest bidder.

Military and defense contractors have been fleecing the taxpayers blind since the Cold War. Their allies in the mainstream media do a great job shilling for war and fearmongering the American people over third world goat herders in the Middle East and a country in Asia with a GDP less than Wyoming.
Our military is an exercise in corporatism and is as much about making a profit for a few hundred people as it is protecting us. A small number of defense contactors make billions off perpetual war and mass surveillance. The politicians who support said wars and surveillance get re-elected and the media's ratings and advertising revenues soar because people want to watch war on tv and are ok with their government spying on them so they feel safe.

The thought of privatizing the military is dumb as shite, however this part of your post is 100% true.
I worked as a salaried employee on a military contract years ago. While we got paid a salary, we charged our time as an hourly employee would because every hour was billed to "the customer." Every summer, we had to start working manadatory overtime whether there was work to be done or not, because if we budgeted for a certain number of hours to be billed at the end of the fiscal year, and we didn't hit or exceed that number, then our budget was required to be reduced the following year. We would literally show up on weekends and play board games and take 2 hour lunches in order to get the overtime in.

Agreed. You need proper controls in place to dictate what needs to be accomplished. Bidding for the cheapest work will not give the results needed.
As taxpayers, we should all want our hard earned dollars being spent in the best possible manner. I don't know if this would be the best choice, but I can say with certainty that what we have now is inefficient and damn near robbery of taxpayer dollars.
I'm very interested to see what other solutions are out there.
