Why don't they make driving school/training & driving tests for your license much harder?

I'm talking a lot harder. You're driving a 2 ton piece of metal 70 mph, you should do a lot more than what we have to do. The impact of it wouldn't be immediate, I know, so the "have to see results right now!" culture we're in wouldn't get it.
But it would eventually, as these drivers who have gone through the tougher gauntlet become the majority, lower the amount of accidents (save lives), lower traffic caused by dumbass drivers, and lower insurance rates for everyone.
Sure there would be fewer 16 year olds getting their licenses on their birthdays, but it's for the greater good. American drivers are fricking horrific and we, as a society, pay the price through traffic congestion, injury/death, and high as giraffe pussy insurance rates.

Would put personal injury lawyers out of business.

Maybe learn the art of drifting and driving on slippery roads. I learned mine in mud.

It should be harder for full grown adults fresh from other countries to ensure they are prepared to obey all traffic laws.

One drivers ed class was taught by a coach… before computerized dmv testing so we had copies of each 3 versions of the test and would “practice” taking those tests so we all aced the real deal
One of my classmates her first day of driving had zero experience, somehow he let her behind the wheel.. she had no concept of power steering.. makes a left hand turn across traffic.. then jerks the wheel back to the right to compensate and puts us back into the oncoming lane … we all screamed and the coach jerked the wheel back into our original lane . It’s a wonder nobody was killed there
We never rode with that
Chick again. Thank god

4 year curriculum in high school. Freshman year, learner's permit. Sophomore year, restricted license. Junior year, less restricted license. Senior year, regular license. You fail, you don't drive. Subsidize this, over paying outrageous amounts for insurance.

How much harder can they make it? I failed the first 3 times.

I believe they do this in Finland. Finns can drive.

I have no idea what the test requirements are anymore. Back in 90’s, there was signs test, separate written test, and the actual driving test. Maybe it’s still the same today.
But one thing I never understood was how it wasn’t a requirement to get 100% on the signs test. Yes, I understand many adult drivers out there seem to not understand basic signs and yielding and how to proceed.
But it never made sense to me that new drivers are allowed on road if they don’t exhibit complete proficiency on how to obey signs. What if they miss “stop sign” on the exam? I’ve never understood it.

I think a simple IQ test would weed out a lot of the worst drivers.

If you really want less traffic and for the vehicle fatality to rate to drop to nearly zero we need mandated self-driving vehicles.

So what do we do about all the Asians with "STUDENT DRIVER PLS BE PATIENT" magnets that drive like utter arse?

I’ll take it one step further.
You should have to recertify every 5 years or so.
MeMaw with her early stage dementia shouldn’t be driving no matter how much she enjoys her independence

People ‘can’ drive…they’re just assholes.

The dangerous drivers around me are 99% people who have too much confidence combined with too little patience. . .
Illegally passing cars in dangerous crowded streets, speeding like crazy, weaving in and out traffic, thinking they can drive with one hand and text with the other. . .
Probably more skilled drivers than many safer ones; it's just a personality disorder.

If you're caught playing on your phone while driving, instant execution. Would solve a lot of problems on the road.

Look at England's driving test.
