Why doesn't Turner Industries do full EPC contracts?

With all the LNG and Data Center projects popping up in Louisiana why aren't they involved?

They do the C part which is construction part but it seems all the projects have Bechtel, Zachry, Worley, Kiewit, McDermott and the other Turner as their General Contractor.

Seems like a missed opportunity.

They're at CP2 but they're a subcontractor not a GC

Because they don’t have the E and are pretty risk averse in general.

Giants like Bechtel, Worley, or McDermott are fundamentally engineering powerhouses first. Turner grew out of a heavy craft labor, equipment, and maintenance background. While they have excellent constructability teams, they historically leave FEED and detailed engineering to specialized engineering firms.

Turner prints money as-is. Probably just going to stay in their lane.

Turner does quite well with just the P&C, with heavy on the C and has for the past 60+ years.

quote:

"We dig great holes, hang steel, fabricate pipe and put the pipe into the steel," Toups said recently. "That's it."

It's actually a lot more complicated than that. Turner is one of Louisiana's largest private companies with more than $3.2 billion in annual revenues and more than 20,000 employees. Its various divisions specialize in industrial construction, maintenance, pipe fabrication and large equipment fleet services and service some of the largest multinational corporations in the world.

All underperform. Turner is wise to let the above mentioned be incompetent.

Turner only takes on T&M work for very low margins. EPC work is complex and they dont have any of the E capabilities (engineering). They also dont know how to do all that in general....especially data centers. Turner is a very low risk contractor

Hard to change order the client for frick ups due to E when you own E.

They made $3.4 billion in 2025 by doing the same thing they’ve been doing for like 70 years.

Because they're extremely risk averse and keep their paws out of engineering entirely. EPC is a whole different ballgame. They are totally fine doing billions in low risk, low margin T&M and maintenance work. They do not have an appetite for lump sum work

Yep, getting greedy in this space and out over your skis is how you lose your arse in the EPC world. Stick to what you know.

Carrying a full staff of experiences Engineers with PEs isn't cheap.

..and it's lowest profit margin of the three.

There is already a Turner that's not affiliated with Turner Industries that is a major player in that sector. At least that's what I've been told.
