But also, learn how to make your point clear. You suck at writing.
Reading the whole 6 line post must have been really taxing. The point was clear.

It doesn’t.
Now if it’s Heartworm preventative that happens to include flea/tick (like Simparica) then yes it does. You can buy flea/tick medicine at Walmart.
They test your dog for heart worms before prescribing because if they have heart worms, prevention does nothing. Dosage is also very dependent on weight and giving too much to a dog can severely hurt it. Too many idiots think would give their dog the wrong dose.

And if you try to buy it online, your vet has to approve the request from the online seller. T
Au contraire.

Speaking of obtuse. The question is, why? Are pit bulls know for getting addicted to heartworm meds and it would be too dangerous to let them buy it over the counter?
Giving heartworm prevention meds to animals with active heartworm infections isn't a good thing. That's why vets test them before signing off on administration of those drugs.

My point was that you don’t need a prescription for strictly flea/tick meds

Pets are big business. Have you seen the price of pig ear chews?

I use a mobile vet who comes to my place with a tech.
I get all my dog's meds (or at minimum a script, I mean, I understand they only have so many supplies in their giant arse van) and a full body exam (including back end, which is always wise).
Costs a little more but it is works for us.

Seresto collar every 8 months
I second this. These collars are expensive but completely resolved the problem. And no prescription needed.

If it's just fleas you can get online. But if it's heartworm too you need a written rx.

Baton Rouge has a cheap vet pharmacy called AVS not sure if similar in new orleans but the prices were always good.

They aren’t that bad when you think about how long they last. Every once in awhile they’re on sale for $60 on amazon and they last 8 months.
I have two large breed dogs. Flea and heartworm prevention costs me about $160 annually for two dogs using 1% ivermectin.

Ivermectin kills some of the Shepard breeds. You can for example an Australian Shepard tested if they cannot or can take ivermectin.

Shepherd. In all seriousness, thank you for your post. I was not aware of this.

One more thing to milk us dry for?
Unfortunately veterinarians are going the way of realtors. Milk milk milk I'm sure there's something else we can milk you out of.

Your reply is basically, "it requires a prescription because it is a prescription medication". In other words, it's no answer at all.

Do you really expect all those fancy vet clinics to pay for themselves?

Buy a "Purple Python" cattle tag that prevents flys/parasites on livestock. Staple/rivet it to your Mutt"s collar.
It will keep them free of fleas for a couple of years.
I use them on my beagles.
The Orange colored tags are not effective. Just the Purple, in my experience.
