re: Why does 20 years ago feel so recent but “20 years ago” in 2004 felt ancient?

Just how you view time as you age is the biggest part of it. But also technology has something to do with it as well IMO.

My kid recently said ‘so you were born in the 1900s’ to me and it hit HARD

20 yrs ago was awhile back. Back in the day is 30+ yrs.

Smartphones and social media stalled societal progress. Culture, music, fashion etc stalled in the 2000s.
In general (not universal), people would rather complain about trans cans,DEI and the other political tribe than creating anything or enlightening oneself.
A friend from Greece told me his country would be way better off if grown men didn’t sit around at coffee shops arguing about politics all day. That’s what we’ve turned into, virtually.

What? Come on. 20 years ago was the 1980's and I refuse to be convinced otherwise.

It’s a weird phenomenon. I’m genuinely curious about the neurological mechanism that explains it.
It’s your frame of reference as you age. How many days/months/years have you lived until now compared to where you were 20 years ago.
What’s another day when you’ve lived for ten-thousand plus days? However, when you’re young things seem to drag on (months, summers, school years) because you haven’t lived long enough to frame your existence in time.
Take a 40-year old; having lived for ~15,000 days…20 years ago, you’d have lived from ~7,500 days. Half your life has passed in that number of days, but as a 20 year old that time span was your ENTIRE life.
ETA/TLDR: Time is relative to your experience and perception.

2006 there was likely still a lot of discussion about Katrina/Rita. That feels sufficiently long ago.

Or when they say something hasn’t happened since 2015 or something and I at first think who cares that’s very recent then I realize it’s damn near 10 years ago.
Other weird thing is I vividly remember Warren Morris, the 1997 FU game, the 2000 Bama game, the 2001 Auburn game, the Sugar Bowl...but I don't really remember more recent games like 2014 Ole Miss. I also can't name all the starters anymore even though I still watch/listen to games.

Not sure if I'm getting old and losing my mind or if the same threads get reposted here on a regular basis.
The latter but I wouldn’t overlook the former.

no because in 2006, TD was full of college kids now we are all middle aged, so thats why discussing 20 years ago seems so easy 20 years ago in 2006, we were all kids

I graduated from high school in 1983, which was closer to the end of WWII than to today.

I get your point, but would have to disagree. 04 & 24 are night & day.
