re: Why does 20 years ago feel so recent but “20 years ago” in 2004 felt ancient?

no because in 2006, TD was full of college kids now we are all middle aged, so thats why discussing 20 years ago seems so easy
I bet this place was a sight more fun than it is now.
A thread I started got fricking whacked this morning for simply asking if Marvin Harrison Jr. was queer.

Time is relative. 8 years is a lifetime to an 8 year old but it is 20% of a 40 year olds life.

There’s a thread on the SEC Rant hypothesizing about what would have happened if Shula signed Tebow in 2006.
I am older, I would view this more like, what if Bryant had not signed Broadway Joe?
What if Bernie stays at Tulane instead of going to Minnesota?
Remember, if not for academics conflict, Tulane goes to the Rose Bowl, not Alabama.

when i watched american graffiti in the 70s i thought those events were so long ago , in comparison it would be 2012

I agree. The 50’s thru 90’s all had their own style, music, trends etc that you associate with that decade.
Everything past 2000 all seems to blend together.
... you are right ...
mostly because events and experiences were new and never experienced before. But as the years and decades progressed these events and experiences were "borrowed" or "expanded" upon due to lack of creativity.
It happens all the time
Take for instance, the movie industry ... Star Wars ...
The original Star Wars was a phenomenon, but the theme and plot were "borrowed" and "expanded" upon by series and knockoffs. But as you can see, the original Star Wars lives on forever.
The same can be said about the Beatles and their music.

... then without the original powerhouse creative ideas flowing, you end up with a remix of everything that has happened before which does not seem to make much of an imprint on the conscious memory. This is where everything starts to blend together.

Ad for a new sitcom, 50 years ago this month
Does anyone view 2006 as a bygone world?

Because we were younger in 2004. For example, I was 16 turning 17. 20 years was quite literally before I was alive. Now, 20 years ago is roughly half my life.
