Why does 20 years ago feel so recent but “20 years ago” in 2004 felt ancient?

There’s a thread on the SEC Rant hypothesizing about what would have happened if Shula signed Tebow in 2006. It doesn’t feel like that long ago and it seems a bit current to discuss. Like I can see direct implications of that change in history affecting today.

But it’s the same thing as discussing something from 1988 in 2006. I think people in 2006 would have just laughed it off as being so long ago it wouldn’t be worth discussing.

In fact, I’d be curious to know if any TD vets can remember any threads of the sort back in 2006. Were we talking about the 1980s back then?

It works opposite in the short term

Last month feels like a distant memory and next month feels like it’s tomorrow. Strange

no because in 2006, TD was full of college kids

now we are all middle aged, so thats why discussing 20 years ago seems so easy

20 years ago in 2006, we were all kids

“The days are long but the years are short” kind of thing?

It’s a weird phenomenon. I’m genuinely curious about the neurological mechanism that explains it.

20 years ago was it was probably the equivalent of your entire life, starting from birth, because you were only 20 then.
Now that you're over 40, 20 years is only half your life / the things that happened after college.

Perspective is everything.

2004 we had computers and the works was much different 20 years prior to that

2023 is much more similar to 2008 than 88 was to 2008

Or when they say something hasn’t happened since 2015 or something and I at first think who cares that’s very recent then I realize it’s damn near 10 years ago.

I disagree. In the last 20 years I’ve established a career and went from being worth $100 to prob $2.5 million.

In my first 20 years I went from being worth nothing to worth $100.

If Marty McFly went Back to the Future today he'd go back to 1994.

I had to sit down when I read that.

Maybe because the designs of so many daily things like cars, clothes, home interiors, etc., changed greatly from the 70s to the 00s but have leveled out from the 00s to the 20s?

Because there is a phenomenon where time appears to move slower when you are younger. People that were born in 1964 probably say the same thing about 1984 that you do about 2004.

Because in 1984 was so significantly different in nearly every way compared to 2004, while 2004 isn’t terribly different from 2024.

Each decade used to be unique. That has somewhat faded.

The days go slow and the years go fast.

Most people gain wisdom and context as they age so it's easier to notice when older.

When I was in high school ('78-'81), Vietnam seemed like a lifetime ago. I knew I was getting old when one day I was driving around in the early 2010s and realized my conflict (Desert Storm) was further back in history for high schoolers than Vietnam was for me. Hit me like a thunderclap.

If Dazed and Confused were made today, it would be about the graduating class of 2007.

The Covid years have completely screwed up my sense of 'past'

2019 feels like it was 10 years ago

I agree. The 50’s thru 90’s all had their own style, music, trends etc that you associate with that decade.

Everything past 2000 all seems to blend together.

That’s interesting too. I wonder why. Seems we’ve lost our sense of art and culture and lack the ability to produce unique designs of things. Just look at the box buildings of restaurants nowadays. All muted and plain.
