I’ve been shaving down there for so long that I’m afraid if I stopped now then my plums would look like Robin Williams’ knuckles by next Tuesday.

Think about it, your crotch is sweating all day, hairs producing oil and trapping moisture, skin mites breeding and feeding. Why not reduce that as much as possible.

It's like grooming anything else. You keeps your cleaner than if you didn't do it. Like a dog. If you have a dog that needs grooming you do so otherwise the hair gets tangled up, stuff gets caught up in it, it's harder to clean, etc.

Actually pubic hair serves a purpose and mainly to protect against friction and worse, Tinea cruris or Tinea genitalis. Also, a common problem is Pseudofolliculitis barbae.
