Why do some gas pumps cut you off at a preset $ amount when you pay at the pump?

$75 $90 $100
Why do the set these things to stop? Gas stations don't like money?
Also, you can't just put your card back in and finish filling up because apparently it's blocked for an amount of time?

Rationing. End of the world as we know it.

When you swipe your card it puts a hold of a set amount, a very low amount. If you pump $100 and only have $25 on your card, the gas station takes the loss. This practice minimizes the loss to the gas station.
Or something like that.

Correct.

Well why doesn't every store limit purchases? Your explanation doesn't make any sense.

I thought it was odd yesterday when I swiped my fleet card and the pump stopped at $50.

Usually affects people filling large gas tanks for trucks or campers.

Then I've got no worries. I can pull in on fumes and fill up for like $15. And that's buying the 93 octane.

Gas stations make very little money off of gas sales. Gas stations' profit comes from sales inside the store.

It limits the liability for gas stations and credit card companies

I haven't experienced that yet.
What pisses me off is when you pre-pay and the pump slows down to a crawl once you get within $.75 of your total. The pump is not going to pump passed the total that you paid for so there is no need to fricking slow the flow.

So I just stopped down the road and gave a competitor $30. Seems like place #1 would have liked that money.

Some version of this. Check with the issuer of the card you use, and find out what amount you might be able to set for the 'hold' when you pump your gas.
If it's not the card issuer, then it may be the policy of the gas station you frequent to only set a low 'hold' amount for payment at the pump. Check with management at that station.
If no luck there, fill up somewhere else.

I've heard two reasons for it.
1. Driveoffs, So if someone plans on pulling a pump and run the store can only lose a set amount. Might not be as big of a problem these days since at most pumps you have to pay first.
2. Sometimes when the handle is held on and the person walks away, the pump won't shutoff and start to over fill the tank and gas runs all over the ground. This will limit the amount of gas spilled.

Unlike other purchases that are done after you know the amount, the gas pumps do not finish the charge until you are done pumping. So technically you can have like 26 bucks in you account, pump 75, then your card would get declined at the end, but it would be to late.
