Why do people wait until the last minute to leave before a massive hurricane?

These FL folks have been knowing all week that Irma was headed their way. (Ex: People on this board were telling the uncle of the Miami student on Monday to tell his niece to GTFO ASAP.) And now millions are on the road the day before the storm is set to make landfall. Why do they wait so long until it's too late? This is the biggest storm in over 20 years to hit FL. Just not smart.

Probably a-hole employers, no money, workaholics, etc

i think most people wait until the authorities order or ask for evacuations to be made

Some work for a soul sucking company like I used to, that had this stupid policy of "Last to close, first to open." So instead of packing up their belongings, and making sure their family and property are safe, they are stuck in an office.

The margin of error in the models and official storm-track predictions are widely disparate, often by hundreds of miles. Some view this as a reason to stay until they know with more certainty.

The storm won't make landfall for almost 48 hours.

By then it's too late and you're basically landlocked in traffic / all flights cancelled already.

board up windows and prepare house for storm?
everything they own might get destroyed and you are wondering why they aren't eager to spend $ traveling?

By "traveling" do you mean getting out of harms way? It's not vacation.

Because history tells us those fricking things can change direction and frick the models in the arse.

Bc these things are so unpredictable a week out. I'm in the panhadle and two days ago it was iffy if this was going to touch FL before going out the Atlantic and hitting the Carolinas, now it's coming straight through the state. Never really know until 24-36 hrs before

I always wait until last minute. No traffic if you wait until the feeder bands are starting to come through

This thing looked like it was going to obliterate Savannah and Charleston yesterday morning. The mayor of Savannah called for a mandatory evacuation. Today, Charleston is out of the cone.
People have jobs, kids are in school, wives have tennis lessons ... it's not that easy, or sensible, to leave a week before a storm is forecasted to hit. The people who left FL and SC for Atlanta are now looking for someplace else to evacuate to.

Depends on when your employer gives you off. Also a boat load of people work $/hour so they can't afford to miss a day or two.

And we see how that worked out for folks in SE TX.

Why do people with the means to leave, stay?

Lol, somewhere like Miami could have 5+ hurricanes in a year that might hit it. You don't just take 35 days off of work a year to leave early anytime a storm is close. Its still very possible Irma swings east or west and completely misses Miami. Now I think the people should leave, but the problem with Miami is its a long arse drive to truly clear yourself of the storm. So its not easy like the panhandle or NOLA to drive 3 hours north and be safe. 3 hours north of Miami and you haven't even hit Orlando yet.

didnt say vacation. they are going to have to spend money on food/gas/hotels. instead of an actual vacation, they will have to spend thousands of dollars just to get to south Georgia.
they are going to have to come back eventually. some probably prefer to be there to start clearing out damage/rebuilding asap.

For Gustav (2008) my boss waited until the last minute to let me know that I wasn't needed at work. She was pissed with me about some crap. It was a real evil thing to do..It took me over 20 hours to get to Birmingham. I had to call to check in with work. I told her I was enjoying drinks by the pool..that didn't sit well with her..
