I’m no esteemed individual either. It’s starting to get very dystopian.
Im sure you are someone who should really judge people.
There are several reasons people become addicts. People have become addicts because they were over prescribed addictive pain meds, etc.. But for people who just up and become addicts, it usually comes from somewhere. We all have the ability to decide not to use highly addictive substances, which is easy to say as an adult, but teenagers make a lot of stupid decisions.
And the decisions teenagers make are usually a result of their homelife. Then there are people who just have addictive personalities. Its the way they are built. Im not making excuses, I am just saying its not like people wake up one day and say "I really want to be a drug addict. There is just something about living like a zombie and getting to the point where you would do anything in order to get your fix.
Then I figure if I don't die at some point I will eventually get to the point where I want to get clean. I heard that is a fun process".

For real. I've been married 10 years and my wife's family just thinks I'm a lame that doesn't drink.

People always get mad when someone talks like this but you’re 100% correct.

But they’d also bet the barn that I’m way too smart, properly-raised, and savvy to have ever been involved with drugs.

most people are not aware of how truly off the rails the narcotics business has become.

so yes, praise is appropriate.
you should be so grateful that you are not the person in the above video, because many of these drugged people began their lives as members of very nice families.. they didnt all come from the trailer parks.
be grateful.

So we're supposed to be in awe that you no longer do drugs and steal from your friends/family/strangers to feed your drug habit?
I’ve never seen this except on tv. But then again, I don’t hang out with a bunch of quitters.

Because they overcame the odds and started to contribute to society, the work force, taxes, being good family members, supportive friends.

You really are an ignorant POS.

I never trust a "former" addict. I know people who have been sober 10+ years and then relapse and instantaneously go back to being the same jerks they were before.

People don’t generally treat them like heroes in MY experience. But this is still America, and many still believe in the Christian value of forgiveness that can be earned with repentance and hard work.
The ones that act like they are heroes or those who treat them as such are idiots.

Well good for you and them. And may god bless each and every one of you.
FYI: Normally I would have a response that isn't so nice, but evidently people can say whatever they want to me, but if I reply to them with something that hurts their feelings I am the one getting banned, getting messages from admins and being banned from doing certain things like start threads so if I have ever said anything to you that offended you.. Just think about that and pretend that was my reply.
I hope your evening is going well..

I don't consider it heroic. These people are stupid for having started these drugs in the first place. So they have temporarily quit. Congratulations. Almost all of them will start again.

The people who brag about it are generally the ones that are least secure in their recovery. Positive reinforcement and affirmation might be the difference between them keeping the course and them deciding that the fight isn't worth it.
The "hens" understood that social dynamic. They weren't "showering him in praise" because they think he's objectively great; they understood that he needed the support. And they got pissed when you fricked it up by being a douchebag and trying to make it about you.

That’s an a-hole thing to say. Those people are worth praise, because they beat circumstances that a lot of people don’t. It’s fair to criticize them for making the choice to do drugs in the first place, but unless you know what’s like to being addicted to something, you should probably shut up. That’s a very dark hole to be in.
