Why do people treat former drug addicts/felons like they are heroes?

Every time someone brags about being "5 years sober" etc you always have a bunch of sheep showering them with praise.
I was at a social gathering a few years ago and some guy started bragging about being "5 years sober".
All of the hens starting showering praise as if the guy just announced that he cured cancer.
I said "hey, if you think that's impressive, I'm 27 years sober" (because I was 27 at the time).
People gasped, the hens blew a gasket and told me that I was a jerk for making such a comment.
So we're supposed to be in awe that you no longer do drugs and steal from your friends/family/strangers to feed your drug habit?

Because society has decided to prop low lifes onto a pedestal.

And tax payer dollars are used to as an incentive for companies to hire these people.
So companies actually have a financial interest in hiring the former drug addict/felon over the life long law abiding citizen.

Yes, for someone to overcome addiction and become stable and productive members of society is worthy of praise.

Probably because it’s a pretty big accomplishment bouncing back after hitting rock bottom at the lowest point in life possible.

It’s a very difficult endeavor to overcome addiction. You might even call it heroic.
It’s unfortunate that so many fall into the pit of addiction, despite abundant warnings, and have to spend their hero’s journey trying to escape the pit. But someone who has fought that battle and is winning is deserving of praise, and actually might have learned something valuable to share with the rest of us.

Because coming out of addiction is something most ppl never come out of, yes we put ourselves there, but coming out that hole is honestly the most difficult thing i have ever done.

As someone that’s sober, I’d rather punch myself in the dick than talk openly about recovery at a social gathering
