I gotta agree with the OP. I do tip my hat to the addicts for fighting to get better, but it’s their own fault they were weak enough to become an addict.

If a criminal in jail turns his life around, I respect it but I don’t forget he committed the crimes.

Oh I’m ignorant. Frick you. My brother is a crackhead who stole from his own family and neighbors to feed his habit. He actually traded the family car for 20 bucks worth of crack one night and then lied bout. Arrested many times for stealing cough syrup. frick you. Y’all chose the easy path when adversity struck and now that you’re “clean” all is forgiven and you should be celebrated for removing your head from your arse? Well guess what frick you. Me and my brother and sister all lost our parents at the same time, me and her chose to fight through it he chose the easy way, so once again frick you for being selfish and egomaniacs.

Exactly.

People are ignorant to all of the lives that these people damaged and/or destroyed.

They ignore the fact that for every home that they burglarized that there is an innocent kid who will never feel safe again in their own home.

They ignore all of the elderly that were mugged and put in the hospital by some pos addict feeding their habit.

They ignore the friends/family that had their bank accounts emptied, and in your case the family car sold for 20 dollars.

For addicts who have cleaned up, good, go speak to schools and children about the horrors of drug addiction so they don't make the same mistakes that you made.
Make amends for your prior life instead of going around bragging about it so everyone will pat you on the back.

I'm with you, Horse. Druggies, reformed or not, are usually the worst kind of scum, can't be trusted, and don't deserve any accolades.

The people who show unconditional support are probably Christians who are living the message of the Return of the Prodigal Son.

Addiction is, to some degree self-inflicted.

Well, sort of. Nobody ever said while sober, “You know what, I think I’ll get addicted.”

Some people seem more pre-disposed to test boundaries, while others are better able to learn by being told, and don’t need to make the mistake for themself.

If we were all held fully responsible for not just the actual and but also the potential consequences of our foolish behaviors, there’d be no innocent person left to point the finger.

What’s wrong with being happy for or congratulating someone for breaking free of something that ruins lives like addiction?

I’ve built a great life while drinking heavily.

I was at a social gathering a few years ago and some guy started bragging about being "5 years sober".
All of the hens starting showering praise as if the guy just announced that he cured cancer.
I said "hey, if you think that's impressive, I'm 27 years sober"
fricking cringe.

You likely came across as jealous of the attention that guy was getting and chose to shoehorn yourself into the conversation like a needy child.

So companies actually have a financial interest in hiring the former drug addict/felon over the life long law abiding citizen.

I don't know a single business owner that has any interest in hiring a former felon/addict

A woman that is stupid enough to date a drug addict is a woman that I wouldn't want in my life.

Nice try though

That's great but not the impression you give off when making ham-fisted, socially awkward comments in an attempt to converse with said "stupid women".

I don't treat them like heros, but I can give them props for digging themselves out of a terrible situation.

There were also people there that laughed when I made the comment.
And people that later thanked me for saying what they were thinking.

Well my wife and I partied for 10 solid years, from 25 to 35, with alcohol, weed, ecstasy, clubs, All while balancing our careers and raising 2 healthy kids. Do we get praise for never stealing or hitting rock bottom?
