If I think back to the 20 smartest and ambitious friends that I had from Louisiana during high school and college (LSU), I think two of them are living and working in Louisiana. My feeling is this is more of the norm than the exception.

And why do you guys feel that the state is subpar in education.

Because it is. Actually, subpar doesn't really do our education system justice. It's atrocious.

Exactly. The job selection in Louisiana for post grads is night and day compared to a state like Texas. That's the reason I left.

A study just released ranked Louisiana 3rd to last in education. Pretty good reason right there.

If you exclude the people I know that went into Law or medical fields, almost everyone I know from LSU is living in ATL, Dallas, Austin or Houston.

The people that are in other industries in Louisiana have strong family ties or farm. There was a healthy sized group of people that treat LSU as a 5-year pilgrimage into rolling hill country of Baton Rouge before they head back to Laffy or New Orleans never to leave again.

I spent 3 years after LSU working in Louisiana. Got trapped in a shite job and moved back to Houston. I am far a dream employee, though.

This ^

out of my 10 closest friends i graduated high school with:
3 got there CPA: 2 moved to Houston, 1 to Dallas
1 got there Chem E degree: moved to Houston
1 got Industrial E degree: working in NOLA
1 got a CM degree; moved to Houston
1 dropped out of school, sold drugs, now sells cars in BR
1 dropped out; project manager for a transportation firm in Lafayette
2 play Pro baseball

I'm also moving to Houston upon graduation

so 8/11 moved out of state 6 of those with marketable degrees.

and that's pretty normal from my experience

Coming from an LSU graduate, we clearly have very different definitions of the word "great"

The universities aren't the problem, it's the overall quality of students that attend them.

Kind of a chicken or the egg thing there.

Are the universities high quality, but the students who attend them are poor quality? Or are the universities low quality for accepting these students to begin with?

While I agree with you 100%, people on here will say that public education in TX is average at best.

Because 30% of our population doesn't work, and is lucky if they have a high school diploma and aren't presently incarcerated.

Those that do get an education and possess natural ability often leave the state. Just not near as many opportunities in-state compared to Texas (for example). The dip in oil and has hurt the Houston, but the city has diverse market offerings and still keeps chugging along.

They reinvest their tax money into the things that keeps families here. I've been here for 6 years, had other opportunities to go elsewhere for work but ita hard to compete with the low cost of living and good salaries out here.

In one way, the LA system of education is to blame but I believe a major component to the "brain drain" is the lack of a diversified economy. If you aren't in the petro-chem field, your options are limited.

Also, poor infrastructure certainly does not inspire young families/professionals to plant their roots here.

Lack of white collar jobs, "Culcha" , unwillingness to grow beyond "the box" aka Louisiana way of thinking, and poor schools were the 4 main reasons I left NOLA to go to school in TX and live in TX.
