So im guessing you dont know any Italian families. Having an entire huge family using a pool of about 10 names ( john, Joseph, Anthony, Mary, Maria, etc ) calls for a lot of nicknames to keep track of everyone.

Trust me. This I know.

I'll be sure to tell Snooky, Pio, Tre, Bubba, Sissy, Uncle Duck and Aunt Baby that you asked about them though.

Exactly. It’s shady as shite to use these “alises”

Like “Bo” Jackson. His name is Lamar.
There was only one Bo Jackson, and this clown arse is NOT him!

We had an Elisabeth & me (I am with a Z), in 2nd grade. I nicknamed myself. Mom always called me by Baptisimal name. But I have always gone by the nickname and everyone else does.

Mom would have never named me "Liz". But it suites me.

The ones I don't get are the ones that don't seem to have anything to do with the original name.

William - Bill
Robert - Bob
Richard - ....
Margaret - Peggy
Henry - Hank

why do you do like my wife and PLAN on using the middle name and not the kids' first name. so now in every class in college they have to correct the teacher as to what to call them. ditto for passports, licenses etc.

Yeah. You’re just making life more difficult than it has to be.

Sometimes it’s to clarify between the two different people named after one another.

On a related note, why is Dick short for Richard?

quote:

That’s a great question. Don’t know the answer.

I didn't either so I asked AI:

“Dick” became a nickname for “Richard” through a medieval naming trend, not because of any modern meaning of the word. In the Middle Ages, people commonly shortened names and then created rhyming nicknames. For Richard, the progression was roughly: Richard ? Rick ? Dick. Similar changes gave us William ? Will ? Bill and Robert ? Rob ? Bob.

The reason it stuck is that Richard was an extremely common name in medieval England, so lots of nicknames developed to distinguish people. Of the rhyming forms that appeared (such as Dick, Hick, and others), Dick became the most popular and survived into modern English.

A fun fact: by the 1500s, “Dick” had become such a common male name that it was used as a generic term for an ordinary man, helping give rise to the phrase “every Tom, Dick, and Harry.”

In the voice of Paul Harvey, and now you know....the REST of the story.

And making it a pain in the arse for future coworkers.

I’ve worked in a regional company and we had some genisues that used their legal name on work documents and their middle name on their email.

How the hell am I supposed to know what their name is?

Tripp/Tripple/The Third

I know a few guys who go by "Tres" to distinguish them from their father and grandfather.

The best nicknames are not just shortened versions of the name. That’s lazy. The best nicknames are picked up organically during life.
