Why do people name their kid one name, knowing they will call him/her a nickname?

Example:
Third generation boy goes by “Tripp.” If you don’t call him his real name, and want people to call him Tripp, why tf don’t you make him Tripp? This is the worst I’ve seen and I know of two examples. This is beyond idiotic.

William, but parents have him go by Bill at an early age.

Elizabeth, Lizzy

Margaret, Maggie

You get the idea.

On a related note, why is Dick short for Richard?

I wonder if the first one was just a dick IRL and that's how the nickname started.

That’s a great question. Don’t know the answer.

Anthony in one case, and Brian in the other.

Apparently “Tripp” is the cool thing to call the third generation.

Isn't the point of a third generation name respecting the heritage/family?

He’s called Tripp because he is the third. You know, III. If you named him Tripp, he wouldn’t be the third and therefore should not be named Tripp (see Joesph Heller). Unless of course his father and grandfather were also named Tripp. But that seems unlikely and would also bring into question how they came about the name.

So you respect the family by completely not calling the kid that name? lol

If you’re formally carrying on family name, it’s okay to use a nickname, especially if you’re in the same household - it’s confusing to refer to grandpa, dad and son as William, but Billy, Willie and Tripp makes sense.

If you’re naming your kid a random selection of name and using a nickname then you are stupid.
