Playground equipment at schools is a racket. If you want it moved from its original installation location , you have to pay the playground equipment company to do it to keep the warranty intact.

Methinks this is just the car seat manufacturers trying to get husbands pressured by their neurotic wives into buying new ones for new kids…

They usually last six to ten years. But you are correct in asking the question of why they expire. No one reason is given, just wear & tear, new technology and new designs are given as a reason.

racing harnesses do

They do, but it is also sort of a racket, they have arbitrarily decided that after X number of years the harness has likely been used often enough, exposed to UV, and other chemicals that the integrity of the harness could be impaired. Tons of aircraft parts used by the military have expiration dates. Many years ago the Department of Defense realized they were replacing perfectly good parts based only on their expiration date. They adopted a policy of replacing parts based on inspection of condition, if the part passed inspection they continue to use it regardless of date.

Same reason hardhats expire in 5 years. The plastic deteriorates over time and doesn't provide the same impact protection it did when new. That being said I challenge you to try and take a hardhat from a baw with 10 years worth of turnaround stickers on it.

Heh. Pretty sure my parents didn’t even put us in car seats in the 70s and 80s

I rode in the storage area of a number of Vette's in the 70's. Including C3's that did not have the sloping/bubble rear window.

Rode in the front seat between parents many a day. Sometimes in the bed of the pickup (as long as it wasn’t against the gate- that was for reckless people.)

The people in this thread calling it a racket would be the first to sue the manufacturer if their child was injured in a wreck and there was a 1% chance the seat contributed to the injuries.

Y’all would all be looking up at those billboards calling those lawyers they do it to limit some of their liability from hand me down car seats that are hanging on by a thread

DoD can afford to hire trained inspectors to review the parts. Baby car seat manufacturers are not going to review all the car seats in the world for us on a basis that will keep them certified/not liable for failures due to aging and so them and their team of lawyers are good with an expiration date.

A lot of the cushion under that hard plastic is plain old molded styrofoam...which I imagine degrades after a few years in a hot car...

Correct this is what I’ve herd, and Walmart had a program where you bring in a old car seat and get $50 gift card.

Why ? Little Jr sitting in that car seat isn’t just sitting there looking at the world going by, he’s farting all the time just like you. Do you know what farts do to plastic?

It's a way to sell more shite, rather than people handing them down. I was selling my little girls infant seat, and I was hit with, "What's the expiration date?" I was completely thrown for a loop on that one.

Now I'm sure a seat built today is better than a seat 15 years ago, so maybe that's what they're trying to prevent.
