Why do infant car seats expire?

Is this a racket playing on the “you would put your newborn child in an EXPIRED CARSEAT!!?1!1??1!!??” Karen instinct?
If it’s been involved in an accident, I understand, but I don’t see how a hunk of hard plastic and metal “expires” after 6 years.
Methinks this is just the car seat manufacturers trying to get husbands pressured by their neurotic wives into buying new ones for new kids…

It’s all a scam. I’ve buckled my 1 year old in the front seat all his life without any problems.

I dunno, but seat belts never expire. You'dd think someone would be smart enough to make a car seat out of seat belt fabric.

UV rays break down plastics. To what degree, I have no idea.

Racket.
It's a way to get people to buy new ones, not hand down, etc.
And I would imagine it limits liability if you do get in a wreck and something happens with an "expired" car seat.

Mr. Cheapskate, go big and put your toddler in a crib that has lead paint while you’re at it.

Yeah, and then they should make planes out of the material they make the black box out of.

I’ve had this argument with my wife numerous times! Lol

A LOT of expiration dates is related to exactly that.
Six years is probably the threshold of loss of integrity if the seat is kept in the worst possible conditions.
Not that a well kept seat can’t last longer.

A lot of the cushion under that hard plastic is plain old molded styrofoam...which I imagine degrades after a few years in a hot car...
ETA - "cushion" might be the wrong word...more like energy absorbers...

My wife was just rear ended ( ) and State Farm is cutting us a check for $900 to buy new car seats. 3 of them

Nah, its probably legit with a factor of safety too. Plastics get brittle and weathered.

I'm assuming it's light. Bullet proof windows expire too.

Lots of sheeple shilling for Big Car Seat in this thread.

Heh. Pretty sure my parents didn’t even put us in car seats in the 70s and 80s
