I know it was a big deal a decade or so ago with the bird flu and whatnot but lately I've been noticing more and more walking around BR with them.

To my knowledge there are no current outbreaks we should be worried about.

Maybe there are just more Asians here now and that's why I'm seeing them more?

The whole thing just bothers me.

I went to China 8 years ago. Every major city has as much smoke and smog as a Cheech and Chong movie.

There are 8 Billion people in the world. About 4 Billion of them live from India through China to Japan. Disease spreading through that dense of population has got to be a problem.

I get why they do it over there. I don't get the guy walking his dog wearing one on Bluebonnet yesterday. Is it just part of their wardrobe now?

For 50 years people in Japan and China have worn masks when they get colds. It’s an indication of their superior social cohesion and responsibility to each other . Now many wear them when particulates in the air surpass a certain level , ie bad smog days.

yep, their culture is such that they wear the masks to keep OTHERS from getting germs from them, and not the other way around. it's the respect and concern for others that drives this.

Well I can respect that. I hope that guy from yesterday can forgive me for yelling "Why did you come to our country if you can't breathe our air."

Not sure how big this is but it's something I read in a fiction book. Talked about asians that worked in the fields were darker due to the sun. The masks keeps the skin lighter in color and reflects a more affluent person.

It was just a description in a mystery book so don't take it as gospel or even very common. Just found it interesting.

All the worst global sicknesses come from Asia it seems. I was going to bookend that with "except for the plague," but it seems that's a chinese thing too

You’ve obviously never been to China. The answer is fricking obvious.
