Air Force one has uprated engines and a higher Maximum takeoff weight than other 747-200s. On shorter airfields they can load less fuel and take off with a lighter aircraft and a higher thrust setting. The problem comes in when a larger quantity of fuel is needed, if the aircraft is near its MTOW it will need the 10-12,000 ft runway.

This is correct. When Bush came in he was light and when he left he went to Barksdale for fuel because it can be heavy coming out of their runways. And I've seen where a 747 could come in heavy at BR if an emergency but the risk of structural damage to the airplane is significant, however they said it would land heavy before it would jettison fuel simply because of environmental concerns. This was some aviation guys and ex Air Force pilots I heard speak at a conference a few years ago and one was AF1 pilot for a time with Clinton. Interesting guys.

I was always under the impression Air Force 1 was just the name of whatever plane the president is riding in at the time.

That's correct. He just arrived on VP plane last night and not the normal AF1.

Regardless, every president should fly domestically (Lower 48) in the 757. I'm sure the operating expense of the 757 vs the 747 is drastically less.

This isn't going to happen and it shouldn't either. Security and logistical concerns.

Oh and btw, they're about to order 3 new 747's to replace the two old 747s as they're nearing the end of their service life at 30 years.

Three of these are going to cost just about 2 billion.

That is still one badass plane.

I read this article from CNN a while back, detailing it as 'an imposing symbol of America overseas.'

20 years ago I got to know a big time AF honcho and I got a tour of the old AF1 and got to sit in the Presidents chair and they showed me the place where LBJ stood to take the oath and where they took out seats for JFKs coffin.

Obviously its a different aircraft now.

I remember when Bush landed in BR. I passed by the airport for some reason and AF1 dwarfed everything else there. You don't realize how small the planes are at smaller airports when all the other planes are small too. Then you get a big boy in there.

Why couldn't BTR accommodate the 747 Air Force One

It can. One of Obama's other stops on this trip couldn't.

A normal 747-400 needs at least 7,000 feet and have been known to operate regularly scheduled service on 7,000 foot runways. One of BTR's runways is 7500 feet long.

Bush landed at BTR twice (2004 and 2008) in one of the 747-400 they use....which I'm sure is more powerful and performance-oriented than a typical 747-400, and probably has the capability to refuel mid-flight.

I have to say....the 747-400 Air Force One and the 757 are both beautiful planes. I'm looking forward to seeing the new 747-8 Intercontinental Air Force One.

I have been inside of one of those black suburbans shown in that picture. It is a freaking war machine. Met the guys that hang out in them too. Not someone you would want to get into a gun fight with.

AF1 is a "VC-25" which is based off the 747-200.

The 747-8 will look good in the presidential livery

Looks like there were two 757s and what looks like a C-17 at the Baton Rouge airport, but I'm not sure. I'm guessing the C-17 is used to haul Cadillac One around?

If you are taking a flight out of BTR today, you probably had quite the show.

The A380-800 makes your everyday 737 look like a miniature toy.
