Why aren't white shingle or light colored roofs more common in the South and hot climates?

Would that make a difference?

Would look like shite being dirty

They are doing this in one of the big cities in Italy. Common sense. Drops the temperature around the city around 5 degrees. Will also in turn save money from not needing quite as much electric.

Not shingle, but the house I lived in while in the usvi had a white roof. Made sense to me.

Louisiana refuses to stop builders from putting six houses on an acre of land. No way will they require common sense lighter color roofs.

Subtle “I once lived in the Virgin Islands” brag.

Because they will just turn black with mold/mildew within a year anyway.

Islands aren't known for their tall, brittle trees. The pine pollen and oaks would stain white roofs here.

houses/buildings in Flarda use lightweight concrete tiles in lighter colors. They do well and look nice, but look like shite after 5 yrs of dust, smog, mildew build up.

Yeah….no thanks Baw! I have enough things to clean around the house, I don’t need a big ars roof to be one of them.

The home I grew up in the early 70’s had been built by a doctor in our town. It had a white roof that was some kind of a hard grout or something. It came in 5 gallon buckets and you spread it over the roof and it would dry hard. It was pure white. It seemed pretty durable because I would get on the roof pretty regularly to get stuff off of it or just for the shite of it. We did have to wash it yearly with bleach if I remember correctly.
It was chalky and you could break it though.

How do you propose one should wash shingles without damaging them or shortening the life of the roof?
Posted on 8/14/23 at 4:08 pm to NoBoDawg
should cover the roof in mirror like reflective coating. that should help.

Galvanized sheet metal roofs in light colors should be more popular.

Neat, didn’t know there was such a thing available.
