The most famous American is probably George Washington and/or Abraham Lincoln. I leave out our current and recent presidents because anyone who knows them also knows who Washington and Lincoln are (most likely).
In addition to the ones you mentioned, Napoleon deserves to be in the conversation, as well as Mao Zedong.

The older they are, the more generations of people who have known them.

Sadly, it would probably be someone in the last 10-15 years that is at their peak of stardom because of technology.
Doubt African tribesmen know who Julius Caesar is, but I bet they know who Barack Obama is. Not that he's the most famous.
It might seriously be Michael Jordan. Or Messi/Ronaldo.

Hmmm by world history I'm assuming you mean as many people as have ever lived on this planet? So in that spirit it would likely need to be somebody from ancient or near ancient times in order to cover most of the generations.
I'm going to say, Alexander the Great or Aristotle or Plato or Julius Caesar

Dead people knowing someone doesn't really count.
Fame is how many people, if polled today, know who a person is.

When thinking about this you have to remember Europe and Asia. How familiar are they with Lincoln or MLK or other Americans? I'm not sure, but I'm guessing taking a world view Caesar or Gandhi would be more famous worldwide

Mandela is a good one but I'd wager a lot of money that more people are familiar with MLK than other famous Americans, including founders.
MLK is highly quotable and the concept of America's treatment of blacks (and resulting civil rights movement) gets tons of play because it is a human rights black eye for the world's biggest human rights crusader.

I think Lincoln, Washington, etc. would probably have less name recognition than Obama, TBH.

Lincoln and Washington are awfully famous all over the world. As of now, they are the two Americans who probably transcend Americana and are truly global figures.
Think of all the American products, place names, and so forth that have "Washington" or "Lincoln" in the title. The "Haitian/Ugandan/Turkish/Iranian/Korean/etc/etc George Washington" is a real phenomenon.

Little sleeper- but Kobe Bryant. It is absolutely absurd how popular he (even still) is in China and other Asian countries. When I was there in 2014 it seemed like every fifth person was rocking a Kobe shirt or jersey

I agree with MLK probably being more famous worldwide thank most other Americans.
But I still think Mandela is probably more famous, you do know he's not American right?
