My horror story involves the Firestone on Siegen. Brought my vehicle in for a rotation and alignment. I made 1/2mi out if the parking lot and my power steering pump exploded.
Firestone and their insurance rejected my claim. Cost me $3k
Repair guy showed me damage to the body of the pump. Looked like someone ripped on the high pressure house

I have a good story actually.
Had an complimentary oil change at the dealership. Noticed oil slowly leaking about a month or so later so eventually made time to bring it back in and let them know about it.
They found they it was the gasket and that it would be $5,500 to replace it. I mentioned that I was here for an oil change not too long ago. They decided that since I was just there and they didn’t catch it that they would take care of it. It had to go up the ladder for the manufacturer and took a day for an answer but it was approved.
I was really surprised.

I had a Jeep grand Cherokee that appeared to develop transmission problems after a weekend of hunting in South Dakota. It did get stuck a few times up to the headlights.
Anyway I bring it to a transmission place near my parents house, transmission is completely shot. Guy seen this all the time. Not repairable etc.
I found a local guy in Baton Rouge. He does a transmission flush or something- i honestly don’t recall.
Never had anymore problems out of thing.

Jeep dealership in Covington. Had my tires rotated and they didn’t finish tightening the lug nuts. I’m lucky the wheels didn’t fall off on my way home.

Years ago the back glass of my 4Runner got busted. Went to dealership for new back glass. After they installed it and I got home I noticed that they scuffed the clear coat(not deep)on both sides of the window. Called them and said they needed to fix that and buff it out. Couple days later I went back for them to fix. When I got the vehicle back I went look at their work. Not only did they buff the scuff marks out, but they also buffed out the paint, and the primer. It was down to bare metal. Not just on one side but both sides! That means they screwed up not once but twice.
I raised ten kinds of hell over that. I guarantee you the idiot that did that used a grinder instead of a buffer.

Inside mechanics joke.

At dealers they get paid on time of the job.
If they can beat the time they make more money.
One tech told me there was a squeak under the dash. Wrote up under warranty that he had to pull the dash out which is a 6 to 8 hour job. All he really did was put caulk under the dash between the part rubbing and the dash trim. 30 minutes.
He got paid and the dealer for 6 to 8 hours of work depending on how they wrote it up.
The tech can now work on more cars making more money.
A lot of times they do lose on jobs also. This is why a lot of techs go to private shops and some prefer an hourly rate.

I’ve gotten to know the service director at a large Nissan dealer in DFW pretty well. Our kids go to school together.
I asked him if it’s decent pay and he said the last 5 years he hasn’t made under 200k. Said last year was over 250.
The hours suck and dealing with customer service but he said if you get with a large dealership the pay is very good. Also said most his techs on the floor make 6 figures.

I was a police officer worked a lot of nights, and made more as a Mack Mechanic in 80’s and 90’s on first shift.
Government job was for my retirement.
Diesel mechanic job paid the bills.
I started as oil changer and did PM’s which gave me extra money to save for a house.
Then the dealer sent me to school on their dime.
At first buying tools was rough and bought used beat up tool box.
It got better and I made very good money as a diesel tech.
A good service advisor does well.
It’s the ability to explain why things need to be done and how to sell it.
Government job was for my retirement.

I bought the part off Amazon for $39 and installed it on my own. Took all of 30 minutes.

She brings her car in for an oil change and tells the service writer that her dome light doesn't work anymore, please check it out.
The service advisor comes back awhile later and tells her that they checked the bulb and fuses and that was not the problem. They would have to trace the wiring to find the problem, cost about $200. She told them she would make an appointment to come back to have the repair done.
I happened to go to her house later that day and she mentioned it to me. I went to her car, got the bulb and went to AutoZone and bought an identical bulb for a few bucks. Put the new bulb in and Suprise! Suprise! the light worked again.
Theiving bastards.

I had a 07 Altima that its CVT tranny started making a noise after 110k. Nissan said it would be $4,500 to replace and said it’s the only option.
I didn’t have the money so I had to ride it out until it Broke down. I just traded it in 2 years ago with 260k. No issues whatsoever just dealt with the noise(it wasn’t that loud).

For the last few months, two dealers near me have had signs out front begging for people to take tech jobs. They've also run billboards looking for techs, no experience needed.

For sure it’s market specific. Hes in a massive metro right off two of the biggest highways.

My dad didn't finish 9th grade in high school. Got hired on at FDF in 1992 making $8/hr as a parts runner. After about 6 months, he was bored and they had a few trucks down so my dad asked the shop supervisor if he could work on one of the trucks. The supervisor was surprised but said, "Don't mess it up." He ended up changing a fuel pump on one and something else on another.
The next day, the big boss calls him in along with the supervisor and asks my dad how long he's done mechanic work. My dad said about 15 years. They gave him a raise to $18/hr. I was only 13 at the time, but it felt like we were rich
