only the ones handing out pink slips, or about to make you work through the weekend, is all that comes to mind.

It's a good way to weed out the bitchers and go-getters.

And some people wonder why they don't get promoted or get ahead in life.

At a 1500 person chem site in the 1995 period , we had another home office inspired cost reduction, outside consultant led meeting where the concept of getting employees to take costs seriously. A topic, managing work hours got a lot of attention, HR and consultants spent a lot of time regards how to communicate that folks were expected to work a full day shift getting every supervisor involved with a script. I asked that our management group take a different approach, Frank and I would go to the gate 45 minutes before quit, sit on a bench and greet the folks with a pleasant smile as they were leaving early. It worked.
Another opportunity was employee scrap sales. That can be a useful benefit to employees, yet historically much of the scrap was prefabricated on company time for specific employee projects. Think stainless steel bbq pit. Scrap sale okey, prefab not okey

I’m old school. 8-5 with an hour lunch.

Casual overtime. Most people in by 7:30 or so. Most out at 5. I worked later mainly because I’d rather work another 30-45 minutes and have a 25 minute commute as opposed to leaving at 5 and sitting in traffic for an hour to get home.

With that said, everyone worked until 5. Everyone.

Were meetings called late Friday afternoon? Sure. Often? Not really. But if you needed to, you did.

WTF is the matter with people these days? Do you want to be like Europe? Or France in particular?

Not me. USA.

Isn't it understood that once we cross 1pm that we are just running the clock out?

In last years of working I became an expert at derailing every meeting I went to. It was fun to have people talking about anything but the subject at hand. Eff meetings.

Eff meetings

18 out of 20 are pointless. Project managers run amok. Let's call a 30 minute meeting with 12 people in it that could have been handled by a 2 line email
