First the attorneys are going to prolong the divorce to take as much money as possible. Then your wife is going take a much as possible of the current assets and you're future earnings.

You'll be starting over with a nicer truck. Also, the kids will blame themselves and unfortunately one of them will go off the rails.

My advice would be to sit down with her and make a more than reasonable offer.

This! Sit her down, ask her what she wants, and cut the check. Or go the attorney route, still cut the check plus pay for two attorneys. It's not hard to file yourself if she's amenable to it. Cutting the check will probably help her become amenable.

I made a list of 5 lawyers and went by their office. Set an appointment to meet. That first appoint was completely free. If a second was needed they charged. My retainer fee was $3500.
Damn thats awesome! Everyone is talked to here in Houma was the same as my experience. Maybe there ARE some "honest" lawyers out there after all.

I blew through my $5000 retainer in 4 months.

There is a lady attorney in Terrebonne Parish that is known for divorces. Get her and you will be set.

If your wife gets her, she will clean you out.
Name? Going through divorce right now in Terrebonne.

Most small towns have few to zero attorneys practicing in them. You tend to get raked. The other side of the coin is that a lot of small towns really don’t like “city lawyers” showing up, so you’re better off biting the bullet and hiring one of the few guys doing all the work at that courthouse.

Oh no there are TONS of divorce attorneys here for such a small population. 99% sure i have one of, if not, the best here. My ex hired a liberal quack and had no leverage in the first place.

Interview them all so your wife won't be able to hire any locals.

Just talking doesn’t create the conflict. He would have to pay retainers to each attorney.

Trust me, I’ve considered the pitfalls associated with posting here. I believe I stand more to gain than lose. I anticipate getting the standard OT treatment but I’ve already received multiple leads for possible attorneys outside of where I was leaning. I’ll cross reference them with recommendations on my end and see who is best, that’s all I’m looking for.

I think it would be irresponsible of me not to take advantage of this anonymous forum to determine who the best divorce attorney in St. Tammany parish is.

Right now it’s tied between a Jesuit boy and a Fontainbleau Grad.

I’ve typed in a few replies and I don’t think they’d get passed the mods but I like where your head is

BEFORE you file anything, teach yourself (easily found online) how to manipulate the money situation in your favor. Some slap dick wanna bes will comment you can't. Simply not true.

Let's just say you pay your buddy 20k to go shoot hogs on his property. Or 15k for letting you get a ride on his jet to Vegas, etc etc. He can kick it back to you at a later date

Can't help crazy!

It’s created a very toxic situation, that for the most part, I was able to shield my daughter from. It also allowed me to really reflect on things and come to terms with a lot of guilt. I wanted my daughter to have 2 parents, and put myself through hell trying to make that happen. I felt guilty that I couldn’t provide that, but the crazy behavior allowed me to let go of that guilt.

To OP, if there is a way to settle and protect your rights as a father, whatever the financial cost, it’s worth it. That will pale in comparison to the cost of attorneys, time, damage to yourself, your former spouse, and your children.

This is one of those times when being a man means taking it on the chin for the good of all parties involved. Protecting your rights as a father is the most important thing. If you can do that, you’ll figure out the financial burden. Just get there as fast as possible.

You need to talk to every good divorce lawyer in the area so your wife cant use them

I learned this from Tony Soprano

I know this has become a meme-joke, but I see some people ITT actually proposing it seriously. OP, do not do this. You can get in trouble for this.

The only one’s who wins when attorneys get involved are the attorneys.

For like 90%+ of cases this is true.

There are some cases with legit abuse (physical or drug) or mental illness that require in depth litigation, but the vast majority of divorce cases are relatively cookie cutter.

Divorce attorneys rely on stoking emotional flames to create conflict which creates billing. They often pitch it in terms of maximizing your share/rights. Unless you're dealing with an absolutely toxic partner, most of these custody plans dissolve in time and the best way to get more access is to have both parents existing in a non-toxic environment not trying to enforce every potential avenue that's possible just to own/control the ex.

It's a toxic, toxic industry.
