Queen of England and it isn’t close IMO. Half the world are former British colonies and her face is still on stamps & currency in a lot of places
For every person there that would know the Queen, would most likely know the President of the USA. Just my opinion, but those would be English speaking territories.
Some different numbers from google searching.
As popular as soccer may be world wide, I seriously doubt there are more people in these top populated countries that would know who Ronaldo is, but not Trump.
Asian countries are not as into soccer overall. I read an article last year that the NBA is actually more popular among Chinese sports fans than soccer.
I think Michael Jackson would be closer to this title. Both Clinton's, Obama, and now Trump would be way up there. Especially Trump and the social media of today. Trump has also been famous on his own for quite some time.. very recognizable.

When he was alive, Muhammed Ali was up there.

I wouldn’t recognize a single pope on the street. if I gave more than zero fricks who they were I might, but I give zero fricks who the pope is

Elvis Presley was for a very long time. Still top 5.

It’s true, but good luck convincing these conservative birdbrains.
The birdbrain is the person that thinks people are saying Trump because they are conservative. As someone else said, whoever is President of the USA is going to be one of the most recognizable people in the world.
Popular and recognizable are two different things. Of course, Obama is more popular and is right up there close to the top of most recognizable people. But Trump is in the news all over (for good or bad) more than anybody and he was famous internationally for decades before even becoming the leader of the free world. Add in stuff he says that catch the attention of different countries (Mexico, North Korea, etc.) and you have an extremely famous/recognizable person.

Putin and the queen are also up there.
How many people would actually recognize the queen if she was sitting there unadorned on a park bench or strolling through Walmart? Just look like an old lady.

Obama has 50mil more twitter followers than Trump. They aren't even close to the same level
Trump was at 14 million followers on election night in 2016, 21 million followers on inauguration day 2017. That was just two months time.
He'll be around 60 million by new years day 2019 and who knows where he'll be in 2020.

The WWE is pretty worldwide, so I’d say someone like The Undertaker would be recognized anywhere he goes.

It has to be a US president or Soccer star. Most people in the Middle East, or Africa don't know who Michael Jordan, Tom Brady or Lebron James are. Ronaldo and Messi are known in places where they don't have electricity.

Right this second, there's not a person who would be more recognized on any street in any country than Donald Trump.
The unique look, orange hair, and the fact that he's on every news cycle in almost every country makes this not even debatable. Europeans would recognize him on site. Russians, Chinese, anywhere in North America, Australia, Japan, every single country in the Middle East.

trump. I live in papua new guinea which is about as far as you can get from the US and has almost zero tie to the US. Trump is in their paper at least weekly. People bring him up in conversation (probably because I'm from the US). I bet I could take a picture of him and the PM of papua new guinea around and would be pretty even % who recognize one over the other. Mainly because parts of PNG are pretty remote and almost zero interactions with their federal govt.

It's usually the President of the United States.

Trump or Messi/Ronaldo. I don’t think people understand how popular soccer is in other cultures. We DGAF about it but it’s up there with religion in other parts of the world.
