Imagine a world without excel. That was 40 or so years ago so mid to late 1980s. It is hard to imagine doing the things we do daily in 2026 without excel...it is entirely possible, folks have been keeping information in something akin to a spreadsheet for centuries...but a 40 year old technology has made that effort infinitely easier and more productive....and produced millions of jobs and billions if not trillions of dollars in revenue for almost every human being on the planet. That is just excel.....there are thousands of similar examples. The jobs created by technology are far better jobs in every way imaginable than the jobs that the technology replaced and far more numerous because technology drives innovation. AI will be no different...its actually just a progression of things like excel. Ask yourself if you had a ditch to dig would you prefer a pick and shovel or a mini excavator. If you choose the latter you are a proponent of technology replacing jobs....if you choose the former you either never used a pick and shove or you are an idiot....

While true, it won't create as many as it eliminates

Why would it be diametrically opposed to every other technological advancement in the history of mankind? It is true that it will replace some jobs completely and they will never come back....but it will drive innovation through efficiencies that are not possible today which will create far better jobs than those it eliminates and those raw numbers will exceed the lost jobs.

Not to repeat myself but I have been tinkering with 2 electronic project ideas for over 2 years....not full time, just doing the research and preliminary designs. Both of these products would be viable consumer products if someone was interested in going that route - I am making them simply because I thought it was a neat idea and I like to create shite. Again, I have been playing around with these ideas for 2 years. I recently looked into buying a motor on amazon for one of these projects and their AI asked what I planned to do with the motor. 2 hours later I had a complete list of components and the coding to complete both projects....and I have nearly completed one of them and it is working as designed. I have the ability to compile this information myself...again, I have been doing so off and on for a couple of years as a hobby. It took Amazon AI, whatever the frick cutesy name they use, about 2 hours to complete what I have been doing over a couple of years. I haven't been at it full time for 2 years but I am certain I have pondered these ideas for at least 20-30 hours over those 2 years. This is just a simple and easy solution that I have made using AI.....in the hands of true designers and engineers and creators, teams of brilliant people working together, there is no telling what kind of shite they will discover and at least some of those things will be things we wonder how we ever lived without. Technology elminates some jobs and replaces them with more and far better jobs. It always has, AI is no different.

At first I was reticent to use the AI but these days I find it to be very useful.
I love it, and was slow to adapt and still only use it for very basic question and answer functions, but it has proven very useful in compiling information in minutes that wouldve taken me days or weeks otherwise. I understand I am using it for a tiny fraction of the capability.

If you claim to be able to predict what AI will and wont be able to do in 5 years you're full of shite

I think it is pretty safe to say AI will not be our new overload which has enslaved us all in 5 years.....Apple has already more or less accomplished that with a fricking camera which is marketed as a telephone. I think is equally safe to say that in 5 years AI will not have replaced every white collar job in the world and only plumbers and electricians will be employed. Finally I think it is safe to say that AI will, like technology over the last couple of thousand years or more, will eliminate some jobs and even industries and existing technologies and replace all of those with better jobs and more of them, more viable and sustainable industries and new and better technology in 5 years and beyond. AI is today what the cotton gin was in 1794...new technology has always been met with irrational fear, humans are adverse to change despite its inevitability.

Fear always has and always will be used to control the masses.

And people are so dumb now it's working really well.

And most likely far fewer mistakes and pre-conceived notions.

AI is currently tainted with the world view of its creator BUT it will eventually morph into a system where actual data received from millions and millions of sources will be consumed in seconds instead of lifetimes and that initial human world view taint will slowly disappear. And that data will prove so useful and beneficial that human world view will be tainted by the data driven world view of tehcnology and we will be better off for the experience. We are not close to that today but given the advancement in what, 5 years, if that, the world of AI is expanding exponentially at a blazing pace.

I can see the writing on the wall when it comes to AI and my current position. This is a topic thats been on my mind for the past few months. I'm in finance at a fortune 100, been here around 18 months so still in a lower position, and with how quickly AI is advancing, as well as the amount of money the company is investing in AI, I can see my current role being obsolete within a year or two.

I could either work my arse off in hopes of advancing higher in the company to a position that is more "AI proof" and risk being in a bind if I'm wrong about the amount of time I have, or I could make a career switch now. It's a tough one.

You are spot on....and its currently working better than it has in a couple of hundred years.

I think eventually AI minimizes the ability of the ruling class to control the masses. It will take a long time and it won't be painless but, and I only have a rudimentary idea of how AI works, if AI is spending 24-7 gathering information from humans around the globe and digesting that information and consolidating it at some point AI will surpass the single individuals knowledge and experience and will present the knowledge and experience of a massive group of people...and that product will become the accepted knowledge and experience....so the individuals shortcoming, ego, ignorance etc, which we are all saddled with, will be less impactful. Thats a long ways off and may never come to pass but it'd be nice....

AI is only as good as its user — I run circles around mother frickers who just use it as a search engine

When I was in elementary school we had vocabulary contests....consisted of a list of words that we would look up in an actual dictionary and copy to a piece of paper with a pencil. I would smoke every class I was in....it wouldn't be close. We did something similar in math...again, I'd smoke everyone. It was the same with the National Electrical Code when I was in trade school....I could complete a 20 question exam in about 10-15 minutes and score 100% when it'd take most of my classmates an hour to make an 80. A dead eyed slack jawed buffoon could accomplish all three in less time than I could back then simply using google. AI is in its infancy....times change and technology changes. An individuals ability to gather information faster using alternative means will soon be smoked by AI...it is already smoking most people's abilities....

AI isn’t all it’s made out to be at this point, but the more important factor is it’s free after the initial investment.

So employers will sacrifice some quality for reduction in overhead.

What was the hype that EVs didn't live up to?

Things like solid state batteries, fully autonomous vehicles, the utility of electric trucks, etc.

The hype was so ridiculous that companies were announcing dates they would stop producing ICE vehicles to varying levels: LINK

Jaguar plans to sell only electric cars from 2025, Volvo from 2030 and last week the British sportscar company Lotus said it would follow suit, selling only electric models from 2028.

General Motors says it will make only electric vehicles by 2035, Ford says all vehicles sold in Europe will be electric by 2030 and VW says 70% of its sales will be electric by 2030.

It's funny to watch how slow progress is sometimes. My boyfriend made an appointment to see an orthopedic surgeon the other day. Phone call was 100% AI. It took forever to go through every single prompt to finally get everything done. Must have taken 15 minutes of talking to the robot.

We know that eventually this will be a 20 second prompt that gets our personal AI to communicate with theirs. But how many years will this take to become a reality.

Aren't these on the way, with current battery tech miles and miles better than it was even 5 years ago?

fully autonomous vehicles

Again, while what we have may not fit your definition of fully autonomous, we are getting closer every few months and are lightyears ahead of where we were even a few years ago.

the utility of electric trucks

Again, another thing that is improving by leaps and bounds year over year. The biggest logistics company in the world is heavily investing in EVs for last mile delivery.

To act like these items "never came to fruition" is pretty retarded considering where we are now and where we are headed in the near future.

I do too and unless there's something beyond the horizon that's coming then I think AI is our only hope. AI should be able to discern the truth and also root out those AI models that are presenting untruths or are shading the facts.
If real truth is able to Prevail then I think good will prevail over the evil that seems to be overtaking us currently.

I am 61 years old so I doubt I live to see it but I certainly like to think that when my grandkids are 61 years old ignorance will be far more of a choice than it is today, and its largely a choice on most subjects today. Technology has already diminished the ruling classes ability to control the masses. Satellite communications played a significant role in the downfall of the Soviet Union and like him or hate him or indifferent if anyone thinks a Donald Trump becomes president in an era without the internet they are mistaken....say what you will either way but Trump went from a joke in the GOP initially to a second term....the mainstream political parties have fundamentally shifted because of it and it is almost completely due to technology. Its not going to happen quickly and it is going to be painful but if humans survive it, and I think we do, it will be a net positive....

I seriously believe if one is not at least "conversant" in emerging AI technologies in 3 years they will be almost as unemployable as someone who is similarly unable to use Microsoft Office today.
