You probably should have stayed in class long enough to learn the difference between subjective and objective.

Texas is not Southern.
Oklahoma is not Southern.
Oklahoma is not Southern.

It's not cut and dry objective, either.
Clearly, Southern American culture is vastly different than Tamil culture. However, when there are areas of tremendous overlap and cross-communication, the lines become blurred.

Everyone from Maryland wholeheartedly believes they are Southern.
Source: College roommate was from Maryland with a terribly forced Southern accent.

Have you ever been to east Texas? Their culture comes from the exact same place as north Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. It is pretty clear cut. Just because it has the word Texas, that seems to offend people. People literally say Shreveport is more like east Texas than it is Louisiana. I guess Shreveport isn’t really southern...

Hence the point about geographical and communicative/commercial overlap.
Culture is objective in the meta and subjective in the micro.

Deep South state are Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. But when I think of "southern states", the states that were included in the SEC before expanding to 14 teams are the states I consider "southern states.
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Georgia
Florida
Arkansas
Kentucky
Tennessee
South Carolina
I guess, depending on the context, I will throw Virginia & NC in there.

Eastern Tennessee is not southern, it is Appalachian
Yes, it is Southern Appalachia. There are many different sub cultures and landscapes within the South. Doesn't mean they aren't "Southern"

Hickok45 is from Tennessee. That makes Tennessee southern to me, even if that was the only reason.

FFS...the beer is named "Dixie".
That's because New Orleans invented the term Dixie. The rest of the South adopted it. You have to remember that back then New Orleans was the anchor for the South. It was to the South as New York is to the East Coast.
Beaucoup shite originated in New Orleans. Culturally, it was America's Paris from 1718 until WWII

New Englanders just changed their messianic obnoxiousness from Puritanism to Progressivism over 400 years.

East Texas is much closer to Alabama and Mississippi than the Cajuns in south Louisiana are. This is not really debatable.
While this is true because south louisianians certainly are unique and endemic and identify at such, they also strongly identify as Southern and so they hold a sort of dual citizenship culturally. Same way a lot of Texans do.
A lot of Louisianians I know really like Texans and I think it's because both East Texans and south louisianians are both Southern and unique and independent in their own way. I think we recognize that and identify with it.
